Dating can be a crapshoot. Sometimes it’s love at first sight, and other times, high hopes for romance last only a second before they … pop. At least, that’s the case on the beloved internet series Pop the Balloon, a speed dating–style show created by Bolia Matundu (BM) and Arlette Amuli. Now, the chaotic charm of the original is going live on Netflix. Enter Pop the Balloon LIVE — the same concept fans adore, now with higher stakes, new twists, and surprise celebrity appearances, all playing out in real time.
For those just popping in, here’s how it works: In each episode, singles line up, and other participants “pop the balloon” of anyone they’re not feeling — instantly eliminating them from the dating pool. Sparks fly, feelings flare, but one thing’s for sure: When your balloon pops, so does your shot at love. With its live format, the Netflix version promises even more drama, dilemmas, and raw, unfiltered romance — all streamed as it happens.
Hosting this new era is Emmy-nominated Nigerian American comedian, actor, and author Yvonne Orji (Insecure).
“What excites me is expanding that fan base,” Orji tells Tudum. When you start a company, you want it to go global. Arlette and BM have been very successful. Now they’re able to have Netflix in on it as well.”
So what can longtime fans expect? Familiar vibes with fresh layers. Alongside everyday daters, reality TV favorites — including Johnny Bananas (The Challenge), Chase DeMoor (Too Hot to Handle), and Zaina Sesay (The Ultimatum) — will join the lineup. It’s a new playing field for them: raw, real, and nothing like they’ve faced before.
The Netflix version of the series streams live every Thursday at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. Like all of Netflix’s live programming, Pop the Balloon LIVE is included with all Netflix memberships.
“We couldn’t be more excited to expand and reimagine Pop the Balloon on Netflix,” executive producer Matt Sharp says. “This new iteration builds on the original’s core concept while pushing the boundaries of connection, chemistry, and unpredictability.”
Pop the Balloon LIVE is also executive produced by Dan Adler and Bonnie Biggs for Sharp Entertainment, as well as Ellen Rocamora.
“We’re thrilled to see Pop the Balloon take on a new life on Netflix,” Matundu and Amuli (who also serve as executive producers of the new Netflix iteration of the YouTube series) tell Tudum. “From day one, we’ve kept love and fun at the heart of the show, and watching it evolve and soar beyond our wildest dreams has been truly exciting. As executive producers, we’re proud to support this next chapter and can’t wait for both new and longtime fans to experience it.”
As for the show’s new host, the creators describe Orji as “engaging, witty, and authentic.” And Orji is bringing even more depth to the series.
“In the simplest terms, it’s like, ‘Hey, how can we put people in the same room and have them have real conversations?’ ” Orji says. “How can we also show people what some of their blind spots might be too? Maybe you pop the balloon too soon, and now you’re like, ‘Ah, they could have been a great guy, but I judged them based on something superficial.’ It’s also an opportunity for people to have real learnings about themselves.”
Those moments of introspection are part of the show’s evolution.
“When there is a connection, they get a chance to ask deeper questions and see if this is a match they want to take into the real world,” Orji says. “That’s a new iteration we don’t see in the YouTube version.”

Pop the Balloon LIVE joins Netflix’s roster of live programming including WWE Raw, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, Dinner Time Live with David Chang, Live from the Other Side with Tyler Henry, Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, NFL Christmas Gameday, and much more; and dating social experiments including Love Is Blind, Too Hot to Handle, Perfect Match, The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, The Ultimatum: Queer Love, Later Daters, and many others.
