We aren’t out of the river just yet, and neither are the Byrdes. After a two-year hiatus, the action-packed crime drama will return on Jan. 21, and if you thought Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) might face lower stakes and less imminent danger this season... well, we haven’t been watching the same show.
Ozark’s fourth and final season will be divided into two parts, with the first seven episodes dropping this month. The latest trailer shows the Byrdes visiting cartel leader Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) in Mexico. “You will use your influence. I will walk away from my business. I will be free of the threat of arrest or assassination and to move freely between the United States,” he tells them. Later, he adds, “Do this and you are free of your obligation to me.”
Do what, exactly? Navarro has several demands: For one thing, he wants to “cut a deal with the FBI.” (Not exactly an easy task.) In another clip, Marty and Wendy have a tense sitdown with Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) and Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner), who’ve officially joined forces, and relay an ominous message from the cartel. “The Navarro cartel has been made aware that you intend to start producing heroin again,” Marty tells them. “They have instructed us to warn you their response is going to be quick and it’s going to be brutal.”
Meanwhile, the Byrdes’ 14-year-old son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) has gotten tied up with Ruth, and he appears to be doing some money laundering of his own. Is anyone getting out of this unscathed? Probably not.
