How far would you go to survive? In Nowhere, the title of the Spanish drama comes from the English word painted on the shipping container where pregnant Mía (Anna Castillo) is hiding. She’s just left behind everyone and everything she knows, fleeing a country overtaken by a ruthless regime and forcibly separated from her husband. After a violent storm sweeps the shipping container into the ocean, Nowhere is her only home as she fights to save her baby and reunite with her partner.

Starring Castillo, winner of the Goya Award for Best New Actress (The Olive Tree) and the Feroz Award for Best Supporting Actress (Journey to a Mother’s Room), Nowhere is the third film from director Albert Pintó (Sky Rojo, Money Heist, Killing God).

Who’s in the cast of Nowhere?

What happens in Nowhere?

Nowhere begins in darkness. By nightfall, terrified families dodge armed security, helicopter searchlights, and trained dogs, as they furtively make their way through a labyrinth of shipping containers that will be loaded on delivery trucks and, with hope, sailed out to sea. For Nico (Novas) and Mía (Castillo), who’s pregnant with their child, this desperate escape is their only hope. A totalitarian regime has taken over their unnamed country, and European countries are joining Spain in harsh policies blocking migrants seeking refuge.

“There it is,” Nico says wryly, “our cruise.” Somehow he’s able to keep a sense of lightness about him, even as he and Mía are herded inside the container and headed toward an uncertain future. Nothing, they believe, can be more life-threatening than the devastating circumstances they’re fleeing. But then Nico’s forced out of the shipping container by a group of armed men, and Mía is eventually the solo passenger aboard as it’s swept out to sea. As waters rise inside the bullet hole–riddled container, her first contractions begin. Over the course of the harrowing and brutal journey that ensues, Mía faces down an avalanche of dangers in an effort to find Nico and a safe harbor.

As director Pintó told Netflix, he aimed to create a “tangible” film around Mía’s story, one that was “raw and emotional, where you could immerse yourself in the drama of our protagonist and not detach yourself from her at any time. To feel her pain and joy as close as possible, to live the survival in our own skin.” Castillo’s performance, he added, “has elevated the film to unimaginable heights.”

Is Nowhere based on a book?

It’s based on a story by Indiana Lista, who also wrote the screenplay, along with Ernest Riera, Miguel Ruz, Seanne Winslow, and Teresa Rosendoy.

Is Nowhere based on a true story?

Where does Nowhere take place?
