‘Murder Mystery 2’: Everything You Need to Know

When we last saw Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as Nick and Audrey Spitz in 2019’s Murder Mystery, they were celebrating their anniversary aboard the Orient Express, having successfully solved the murder of billionaire Malcolm Quince (Terence Stamp). Now their reputation as messy (but kind of effective?) amateur detectives precedes them in a sequel directed by Jeremy Garelick.

Murder Mystery 2 picks up with Nick and Audrey struggling to find clients for their fledgling detective agency. “They’re in a totally new business,” Garelick says about how the two characters have changed since the first film. To reflect this new stage in the Spitz’s journey, the director wanted this installment to stand on its own.

“There’s definitely a lot more action in this second [movie],” Garelick teases. “I tried really hard to create something that started from scratch in terms of taking a genre and a tone that existed in [Murder Mystery], but bending the rules.”

What does that look like? Find out as Sandler and Aniston team up again to solve an even more mysterious case.

When is the Murder Mystery 2 release date?

Murder Mystery 2 will stream on Netflix on March 31.

What is Murder Mystery 2 about?

Nick and Audrey Spitz are now full-time detectives trying to get their private eye agency off the ground. But, amid their business struggles, they find themselves at the center of an international scandal: Their friend, the Maharajah, is kidnapped at his own wedding. The sequel sees Nick and Audrey attempt to solve yet another mystery in an effort to find and bring home the Maharajah.

For Garelick, the secret to what makes the murder mystery genre so thrilling is the audience’s sense of participation. You’re not just watching people solve a case — you’re also trying to piece together the clues in real time. “I love being able to play along,” he says. If at the end of the day, I can actually figure it out and solve it along with our main characters, it feels like we were on a journey together.”

Who is in the cast of Murder Mystery 2?

Adeel Akhtar and John Kani reprise their roles as Maharajah Vikram Govindan and Colonel Ulenga alongside Aniston and Sandler. The opportunity to work with Sandler and Aniston is what initially drew Garelick to the project.

“I got a call to see if I wanted to direct a movie with Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler — I didn’t even need to read the script,” he says. “Adam Sandler has been my comedic hero for 30 years.” He’s also a constant source of style inspo. “I modeled my own fashion sense after Adam Sandler,” Garelick jokes, referring to Sandler’s famous penchant for comfortable, casual looks. That’s why the director had so much fun making Sandler dress up for the part.

As for Aniston, Garelick had worked with her before on his 2006 film The Break-Up. “I fell in love with Jen and have always wanted to work with her again,” he says. “[She’s] that person that I think every guy imagines his perfect partner to be. She’s your best friend, and you can tell her anything. You’re rooting for her. You want Jennifer Aniston to win in life and on-screen.”
