Like any major city, Mumbai has always had its fair share of crime — but the 1990s were arguably its criminal heyday. Crime boss Dawood Ibrahim and the tens of thousands of gangsters in his network reigned over Mumbai in the ’90s. In response, authorities unleashed what became known as “encounter cops,” who were as lethal as the crime lords they targeted. Mumbai Mafia: Police vs the Underworld explores Ibrahim’s rule, the dangerous gangsters-versus-cops dynamic and its lasting impact on Indian culture. Here’s what you need to know.
The documentary centers around Mumbai, India, one of the world’s largest cities.
In the early ’90s, Mumbai — formerly Bombay — was a violent city where gangsters often wielded more power than the police. Underworld don Ibrahim employed as many as 25,000 people in his sprawling crime organization, which became known as the “D-Company.” The D-Company trafficked in smuggling, gambling, drugs and extortion rackets that targeted everyone from shopkeepers to Bollywood elites. The documentary explores what led to Ibrahim’s rise, the crimes the network committed and how the all-powerful mafia don was finally taken down.
The film features interviews with some of India’s notorious encounter cops, criminals involved in Ibrahim’s network and the journalists who covered it.
The documentary is streaming now.
