It’s the end of the world, and Mulligan has turned the apocalypse into one big joke.

Created by 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alums Sam Means and Robert Carlock, the animated comedy series about Matty Mulligan — the everyman who becomes president after Earth is destroyed by aliens — is getting a Part 2. The upcoming 10 episodes include a party cruise ship full of new characters, lavish musical numbers, guest stars, and a newly invented meat substitute that takes on a (terrible) personality.

Means and Carlock are frequent collaborators of Tina Fey — who also happens to voice Dr. Farrah Braun, the last scientist on Earth — which means they’re experienced in packing half-hour episodes with jokes on jokes. “It’s the kind of show we’ve been writing for years — 30 RockKimmy SchmidtGreat News,” says Means, “but with the palette and the scope that you can bring to animation.”

Adds Carlock, “If you miss laughing at half hours in recent years, come on in. The water is warm… because Sam had an accident.”

Whether you start streaming Part 1 right now (recommended) or you jump right into Part 2 when it starts streaming on Netflix on May 24, here’s everything you need to know about Mulligan.

What is Mulligan about?

Let’s hear the premise directly from the guys who came up with it, shall we?

“Well, aliens attacked Earth and destroyed most of it, and we’ve got our everyman hero in Matty Mulligan (Nat Faxon), who’s the guy from every [apocalyptic movie] with the grenade on top of the ship who throws it into the tiny vent and blows up the entire alien armada, killing the hive mind and saving humanity,” says Means. And that’s just the first couple of minutes from the Part 1 pilot. “Where the show really starts is, ‘What do we do now?’ ”

Continues Carlock, “There’s a reason that the movie always ends with the ship blowing up and everyone’s saying, ‘Yeah, we did it!’ because that’s when the hard stuff comes.”

Means thinks Mulligan has a workplace comedy feel, too. “We made, if you will, an office comedy where the office is a postapocalyptic Washington, D.C. and what’s left of the White House,” says Means. “And these people, this ragtag bunch of weirdos, are doing their best to try and figure out how to govern the world and farm and make electricity.”

Where does Mulligan: Part 2 begin?

Part 1 left off with our motley group of survivors (who believed themselves to be the last people on Earth), discovering they’re not alone when a cruise ship full of sunburned strangers washes up on the Potomac River. In Part 2, Matty and his constituents realize that this group of booze-cruisers hasn’t been surviving the same way they have. “Now we’re facing these two different philosophies of how to survive a post alien attack,” explains Means.

And don’t worry, Part 2 will begin with a song-and-dance number to bring you up to speed. It will also feature a killer robot who rediscovers his love for musical theater, a summer camp at Camp David, and a storyline featuring Professor Braun creating a meat substitute that “becomes sentient and is a jerk,” according to Carlock.

Who’s in the Mulligan: Part 2 voice cast?

“I will take any opportunity to talk about how incredible this cast is and how lucky we were to have them,” says Means. Here’s a list of the main cast and characters that make up Mulligan nation:

  • Nat Faxon (Married, Disenchantment) as Matty Mulligan: a brash everyman from Boston who learns the hard way that being president isn’t all parades and having his own bowling alley. He now has to earn the respect of a fickle populace while staving off sinister cruise directors, power-mad plumbers, and simian assassination attempts.
  • Chrissy Teigen (The Mitchells vs. the Machines) as Lucy Suwan: a former beauty queen who’s constantly underestimated but isn’t afraid to take on cannibals, beavers, and her own religious upbringing. “She’s so funny and she’s so game,” says Carlock of Teigen. Adds Means, “She was a real revelation to us.”
  • Tina Fey (30 Rock, SNL) as Dr. Farrah Braun: the last scientist on Earth who has her hands full solving all the problems of a postapocalyptic world while also taking care of her kids… especially when one of those “kids” is the increasingly rebellious cyborg super-soldier she built.
  • Sam Richardson (Veep, I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson) as Simon Prioleau: a history professor and the last person holding onto ideals like proper spelling, archery, and actually knowing what’s in the Constitution.
  • Dana Carvey (Wayne’s World, Straight White Male, 60) as Senator Cartwright LaMarr: a genteel Southern conservative from a world that was already dying out even before the attack. But if he wants to remain in power as vice president, he’ll have to learn to adapt to scary new concepts like women being allowed to have opinions.
  • Phil LaMarr (Futurama, MadTV) as Axatrax: the commander of the alien invasion who goes from being Matty’s prisoner to his unlikely friend.
  • Kevin Michael Richardson (Family Guy, F Is for Family) as TOD-209: a war machine built by Dr. Braun to fight the aliens that starts to ask questions and rebel against its “mother.”
  • Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, Big Mouth) as General Scarpaccio/Jayson Moody: a teenage kid fully embracing his role as “General Scarpaccio” (the name on a uniform he found on a charred corpse), Matty’s top military adviser. “I don’t think we can afford her anymore,” jokes Carlock of Edebiri. Means agrees: “She’s gone on to do, some might say, better things.”
  • Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter films, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story) as King Jeremy: a feckless party boy who King Ralph-ed into the monarchy.
  • Ronny Chieng (M3GAN, Crazy Rich Asians) as Johnny Zhao: a Hong Kong billionaire determined to recapture the pampered life he lost when the aliens attacked by any shady means necessary.
