Katt Williams, never afraid of being bold, declared maybe his boldest mission yet in Katt Williams: Woke Foke. “I don’t just tell Black secrets,” he warned the crowd at one point during his new Netflix comedy special, which streamed live on May 4 as part of Netflix is a Joke Fest. “I tell white secrets, too. ’Cause we’re all family.”
He meant it. The King of Underground Comedy shared his sharp, pointed observations and lessons in his trademark rapid-fire style. Arriving on stage at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, wearing a custom WOKE FOKE medallion necklace, he went after just about everyone and everything: why being “woke” itself is hardly bad, (toxic) masculinity, the “Illuminati,” Trump, Biden, Ron DeSantis, Nick Cannon, Jamie Foxx, Oprah, Ozempic — naming names and (literally) showing pictures, at least when he didn’t look desperate to catch a breath between all the curveball punchlines.
But clever swipes aside, this was anything but a pessimistic affair. Williams earnestly explained why he thinks “this is the greatest time to be alive in human history,” and relatedly, why racism requires believing “some stupid s**t” in 2024. Williams isn’t afraid of much, but he also wasn’t shy about sharing what he thinks is going right in the world, complete with gold-dripping jewelry and air horns to underline his message. Hey, Katt’s still gonna be Katt.
A comedy legend, Williams performed his first stand-up show when he was still a teenager and got his own special in 2006 with The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1, in which he memorably donned a green velvet blazer and riffed on how “weed is getting stronger every two weeks.” He’s also appeared in movies like Friday After Next and Norbit and TV series including The Boondocks and Atlanta. In his most recent special, World War III, Williams took aim at conspiracy theories and joked about “truth, lies, chicken wing shortages, and the war on drugs.” Woke Foke comes from the production company Dakota Pictures and is directed by Troy Miller.
Williams hit the stage of the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, during Netflix’s comedy festival for a special that went live on Netflix on May 4 at 7 p.m. PDT, and it’s also available now for streaming. This was his 12th comedy special to date and third special with Netflix, following 2018’s Great America and 2022’s World War III. (He also previously performed at NIAJ in 2022.) Woke Foke marks Netflix’s second ever live stand-up comedy special since the historic Chris Rock: Selective Outrage.
