Firefly Lane covers a lot of ground – what else can you expect from a show about the kind of friendship that lasts a lifetime? Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart’s (Katherine Heigl) platonic love story begins in 1974, when the two become neighbors, shaking things up on quiet Firefly Lane. Fast-forward to 2003, and the two have shared clothes, milestones and even lovers over the course of nearly three decades side by side. It all makes for a wild ride, but it can also be a lot to keep track of. And with Season 2 premiering on Dec. 2, remembering the details of Kate and Tully’s ups and downs is more urgent than ever.
Don’t have time to rewatch all 10 episodes? No problem! Check out the video recap above, which compresses almost 30 years of friendship (and fashion) into less than three minutes.
Based on Kristin Hannah’s 2008 novel of the same name, Firefly Lane follows best friends Tallulah “Tully” Hart (played by Ali Skovbye as a teen and Heigl as an adult) and Kate Mularkey (played by Roan Curtis as a teen and Chalke as an adult) as they navigate high school, college, career challenges and relationships over the course of 30 years.
Tully and her hippie mom, Cloud (Beau Garrett), move in next door to the Mularkeys on Firefly Lane in Snohomish, Washington, in the suburbs of Seattle. At first, Kate and Tully don’t share much common ground. Tully is, well, a cool girl, while Kate feels most at peace with her nose buried in her worn copy of The Hobbit. But the two form an unshakeable bond after Kate finds Tully alone and crying in the aftermath of a sexual assault. Thus, their sisterhood is born.
As adults, awkward and shy Kate finds herself in Tully’s shadow as the two pursue journalism careers in Seattle. Still, the two remain as close as sisters even though life often pulls them in different directions. While Tully pursues her dream of being an on-air anchor and TV star, Kate chooses love and family with office crush-turned-husband Johnny (Ben Lawson) and daughter Marah (Yael Yurman). But when Kate’s marriage hits a rough patch and Tully’s hit show The Girlfriend Hour faces cancellation, the two know they always have a shoulder to cry on. Or do they? In the Season 1 finale, we learn that Tully has crossed a line and done something that Kate finds hard to forgive, although exactly what that is remains a mystery.
Though the “present” in Firefly Lane is technically set in 2003, the show follows Kate and Tully on three different timelines, so expect some sartorial surprises! The two first meet in 1974, when Farrah Fawcett shag cuts, suede boots and blue eye shadow are the height of groovy. 1982, when Kate and Tully start work at KPOC in Seattle, is ruled by shoulder pads and hair that defies gravity. And 2003? Well, that can only mean UGG boots, low-rise jeans and an astonishing amount of T-shirt layers. (Seriously, why?)
Johnny Ryan is KPOC’s resident dreamboat. But while Kate instantly falls head over heels for his overly long hair and Australian accent, it’s Tully that Johnny first sets his sights on. The two briefly hook up while Kate pretends not to care, but eventually – and after one or two drunken false starts – Johnny falls for the right girl. He and Kate eventually get married and have a daughter, Marah, but in 2003, they’re recently separated. Though Johnny has been working as Tully’s producer, he quits to cover the war in Iraq. (Remember, 2003.) He and Kate share a romantic night before he leaves, and they seem to be headed for a reconciliation until Johnny is injured in an explosion in the Season 1 finale. Does he survive? You’ll have to wait until Season 2 to find out.
Tully’s one-night stand with EMT Max Brody (Jon Ecker) quickly evolves into marriage and a baby after she finds out she’s unexpectedly pregnant at age 43. For Tully, who has long been ambivalent about wanting kids, committing to this new life with Max requires a leap of faith, but after some hesitation, she embraces this new path. But the whirlwind fairy tale doesn’t last: Tully tragically miscarries, and she and Max can’t get past the devastating loss. The two decide to annul the marriage and go their separate ways, with Tully seeking comfort from Kate once more.
Kate and Tully end Season 1 celebrating their new business partnership, oblivious to the reality that Johnny has been injured on another continent. But that’s not the biggest bombshell from the finale. Throughout the 10-episode arc, scenes from a mysterious funeral hinted at a major falling out between the two women. Now, we know that it was Kate’s father, Bud, who died, although we’re still left guessing about what made her so mad at Tully that their friendship might be lost forever.
