In 2023, filmmaker David Fortune was the recipient of a $1 million prize and the chance to bring his movie idea to life. That movie, Color Book, is now coming to Netflix on June 19.
The winner of AT&T’s Untold Stories annual pitch competition, Fortune was given the resources to write and direct his debut feature, which chronicles the story of a widowed father, his son, and their first baseball game together.
“Color Book is a heartfelt story about love, family, and the communities we come from,” Fortune says. “I’m truly excited for audiences around the world to experience this emotional journey on Netflix and connect with these characters in a real and meaningful way.”

The drama follows a devoted father who, after the loss of his wife, learns to raise his son with Down Syndrome as a single parent. As they adjust to their new reality, the two embark on an adventure through Metro Atlanta to attend their first baseball game.
Color Book, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, landed Fortune on Variety’s 2025 Directors to Watch list, which in earlier years has included the likes of Taika Waititi, Chloe Zhao, and Luca Guadagnino. The film was also a Variety critic’s pick, with writer Lisa Kennedy calling Fortune “impressively good.”
