No, this isn’t the work of the Joker: Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is now streaming on Netflix in the US.

Many filmmakers and actors have taken on the Caped Crusader over the decades, but Nolan and his Batman, Christian Bale, remain one of the most successful and beloved iterations of the iconic DC Comics superhero. Once Nolan was handed the keys to Wayne Manor, he kicked things off with an origin story, 2005’s Batman Begins. In that film, Bale’s Wayne leaves Gotham as a spoiled billionaire heir, only to return years later as the crime-fighting vigilante Batman.

Following the critical and commercial success of the debut installment, Nolan and Bale returned to even bigger fanfare with 2008’s The Dark Knight and 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which both earned over $1 billion at the global box office. Just as notable, Heath Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his chilling performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Before you climb into the Batmobile for this action-packed triple feature, here’s what you need to know about the legendary superhero films.

Which films make up Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy?

Batman Begins

Co-written by Nolan and David S. Goyer, Batman Begins opens with the infamous murder of Bruce’s parents, before jumping ahead to his failed attempt at killing the perpetrator. He soon sets off on a journey of self-discovery, where he trains with Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) and the mighty League of Shadows. Bruce eventually returns home to Gotham City, where he takes a renewed interest in his family’s company, Wayne Enterprises, and poses as a shallow playboy. But by night, he’s Batman, determined to save Gotham from vicious crime bosses and corrupt psychologists alike.

The Dark Knight

For the highly anticipated sequel, Nolan teams up on the script with his brother, Jonathan. The Dark Knight finds Bruce looking forward to retiring Batman, believing Gotham has a promising new protector in district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), the colleague and romantic interest of Bruce’s childhood friend Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, who took over the role played by Katie Holmes in the first film). But the sudden emergence of the chaos agent known simply as the Joker (Heath Ledger) will forever change Bruce, Harvey, and all of Gotham.

The Dark Knight Rises

To finish his trilogy, Nolan reunites with his brother for the Dark Knight Rises screenplay. The third and final installment takes place eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, which still haunt Bruce, who now lives life as a recluse. But Bruce is soon lured back into the world by Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway), a mysterious cat burglar, and Bane (Tom Hardy), Ra’s al Ghul’s powerful follower. For his last battle, Bruce needs the help of his trusted allies: butler and father figure Alfred (Michael Caine), Wayne Enterprises tech wizard Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), and Gotham Police Commissioner James Gordon (Gary Oldman).
