Wheat for wood, anyone? The world of Catan is about to get a lot bigger.

Through a new partnership with Asmodee — a global leader in tabletop gaming known for games like Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, and Exploding Kittens — Netflix is developing a slate of scripted and unscripted projects inspired by the hit board game. They’ll be the first-ever screen adaptations of the global phenomenon in which settlers navigate vast landscapes, forge shifting alliances, and compete for scarce resources as robbers roam the island.

Created by Klaus Teuber in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan, the game has sold more than 45 million copies and been translated into more than 40 languages, uniting generations of players through strategy, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos. Now Netflix and Asmodee are turning that island, rich in resources and shifting alliances, into an epic new storytelling universe.

“Millions of people [have been] enjoying Catan since it was created, and for many it remains a gateway to modern board gaming. I’m thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe. I find it exciting for the future of the brand,” said Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee. “It’s also a testament that board gaming is truly part of pop culture and a popular form of entertainment in everyone’s homes, and I’m delighted to continue Asmodee’s relationship with Netflix.”

The projects will be produced by Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio (an Asmodee studio), and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber, under the deal. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment is also attached to produce.

“Anyone who has played Catan knows [that] the intense strategy and negotiation at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” said Jinny Howe, head of scripted series, US and Canada, Netflix. “We knew landing this deal would be as game-changing as a well-placed settlement, so we decided to pool our resources across series, features, animation, and games and show Asmodee the full power of Netflix when we work together. Hardcore ‘Settlers’ are going to lose their minds, and new fans will finally learn just how important a sheep trade can be.”

This latest collaboration adds another title to Netflix’s ever-expanding world of game-to-screen stories, joining Arcane, Castlevania, Family Pack, Exploding Kittens, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed series, the Monopoly reality competition, and the Gears of War film.

Gather your bricks and wood, and continue to check Tudum for all your Catan updates.
