Bob Saget — who famously proved that it’s possible to be a crass comedic icon and America’s most beloved father at once — was found dead in his Orlando, Florida, hotel room on Sunday. The local sheriff’s office confirmed his death with The New York Times, although the cause is not known. He was 65 years old and, at the time of his death, on a nationwide comedy tour. Here’s a look back at his legacy of making millions of Americans laugh.
Saget started his career on CBS’ The Morning Program in the 1980s before getting his breakout role as Full House patriarch Danny Tanner in 1987. “Full House was an accident,” Saget told CNN in 2021. “I got fired from a job on CBS and was asked to be in Full House.” Two years later, he started hosting America’s Funniest Home Videos. After he left both roles in 1995 and 1997, respectively, he made his directorial debut with the comedy film Dirty Work and appeared in a number of sitcoms before nabbing the voice-over role of Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother.
During his HIMYM years, Saget further solidified himself as an award-winning comedian. In 2007, he released an HBO special, and in 2014, he even earned an Emmy for his comedy album That’s What I’m Talkin’ About. Most recently, though, he reprised his most famous role in the Full House spinoff Fuller House, which aired on Netflix from 2016 to 2020.

“I was crying all over the place. It brought back a lot of memories for me… I was very, very verklempt,” Saget told Us Weekly in 2019, shortly after wrapping the final season of Fuller House. Saying goodbye to his co-stars, including his on-screen daughters Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin, was also bittersweet. “We’ve stayed friends all these years. It’s not just a press thing that we say,” he said. “To see them so accomplished and see three empowered women do a comedy kids show with morality lessons — it had those elements in the original series. I was more emotional about seeing them and being with them.”
If you’re looking to honor Saget’s legacy and say goodbye to Danny Tanner yourself, all five seasons of Fuller House are available on Netflix — or, if you’re more partial to his raunchy comedic stylings, stream Historical Roasts. Whether you prefer laughing at heart-wrenching sitcoms or NSFW stand-up, something in Saget’s expansive catalog will make you laugh while you cry.
