‘Black Knight’ Delivers Justice in a Dystopian Future

A delivery man tries to save what’s left of humanity from classist overlords.

Welcome to 2071. Decades ago, a comet struck Earth and killed 99% of the planet’s population. Since then, all of Seoul has turned into a wasteland — where only certain groups are deemed worthy enough to receive now-scarce resources like oxygen and food, which are delivered by couriers. Those denied these resources are called refugees and are aided by a secret faction of couriers, aka black knights. The most heroic of them all is 5-8, and he’s  determined to thwart Chun-myung, an evil empire more powerful than the government. The sci-fi series Black Knight — starring Kim Woo-bin (Master and Our Blues) — was created by Master writing-directing team Cho Ui-seok and Kim Hyun-deok.

What happens in Black Knight?

The survivors of a comet strike have been divided into four classes based on their socioeconomic status. Each class lives in designated districts, and each person within those districts is tattooed with a QR code that gives them access to resources like oxygen and food. 5-8 is a legendary deliveryman who covertly distributes resources to refugees in need. Sa-wol, a young refugee illegally living with Major General Seol-ah and her sister, Seul-ah, dreams of becoming a courier like 5-8. When chance — and tragedy — bring 5-8 and Sa-wol together, they team up to fight the system.

Is Black Knight based on a book?

Yes — sort of. Black Knight is based on Delivery Knight, a webtoon by Lee Yoon-gyun.

Where does Black Knight take place?

The series takes place in a desertified Seoul.
