If you can’t trust your friends, who can you trust? But with $20 million on the line, the police officers in The Rip question each other’s priorities. The new crime thriller from writer-director Joe Carnahan — about a team of Miami cops who discover millions of dollars in a derelict stash house — stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who’ve famously been real-life friends since childhood. “Talk about … meta,” Carnahan told Tudum. “You’ve got these two guys who have both been world-famous for over 30 years with a wonderful sense of friendship and brotherhood.… Those guys are just so gifted and lovely and talented and open.”

The duo, who also produced The Rip, began their careers in the ’80s and early ’90s in movies like Mystic Pizza (Damon) and Dazed and Confused (Affleck). And let us not forget that they both had uncredited parts in Field of Dreams. But the pair got their big Hollywood break side-by-side after co-writing and co-starring in Good Will Hunting, which won them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and got Damon his first acting nomination.

From there, Damon would go on to star in movies like Saving Private Ryan, Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, and the Bourne franchise; he was nominated for Oscars for his roles in Invictus and The Martian, and he’ll soon lead Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Meanwhile, Affleck starred in Armageddon, Gone Girl, and Shakespeare in Love, and he played the Caped Crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. He also directed movies like Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Live by Night, and Argo, which won Best Picture in 2013. Affleck will also direct and star in Netflix’s upcoming kidnapping thriller Animals.

The Rip

When Miami’s Tactical Narcotics Team, led by Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Affleck), “rips” $20 million in cash on a job, they’re required by law to stay on location and count every last dollar. The team — which includes Detective Mike Ro (Steven Yeun), Detective Numa Baptiste (Teyana Taylor), and Detective Lolo Salazar (Catalina Sandino Moreno) — begins to question each other as outside forces gather after learning about the size of the seizure. Kyle Chandler (Bloodline), Sasha Calle (On Swift Horses), Scott Adkins (Ip Man 4: The Finale), Néstor Carbonell (Bates Motel), and Lina Esco (S.W.A.T.) co-star.

Triple Frontier

Oscar Isaac (Frankenstein), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), Pedro Pascal (Gladiator II), and Affleck star as former US Army Delta Force members in this action adventure directed by Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor (Margin Call). When Santiago “Pope” Garcia (Isaac), who’s been working in Colombia to combat drug cartels, learns of a safe house in the jungle with $75 million, he approaches his retired comrades to help him steal the cash. Adria Arjona (Hit Man) also co-stars.

The Talented Mr. Ripley

This psychological thriller follows Tom Ripley (Damon), a con artist who’s hired by a shipbuilding magnate (James Rebhorn) in 1950s New York City to travel to Italy and convince his son, Dickie (Jude Law), to return home. But Tom becomes enamored with Dickie and his lavish lifestyle, and he sees an opportunity to change his lot in life — even if it means destroying someone else’s. Gwyneth Paltrow (The Politician), Cate Blanchett (Knight of Cups), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), and Jack Davenport (The Wedding Date) also star.

The Last Thing He Wanted

Directed by Dee Rees (Mudbound) and based on Joan Didion’s 1996 novel, The Last Thing He Wanted is a political thriller starring Anne Hathaway as Elena McMahon, a journalist who becomes entangled in her father’s (Willem Dafoe) arms deal while trying to break a story. Affleck plays Treat Morrison, a diplomat investigating Elena’s past. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and also stars Rosie Perez (Do the Right Thing), Edi Gathegi (Superman), Mel Rodriguez (The Last Man on Earth), and Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

Elysium

Writer-director Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9) dystopian sci-fi action flick takes place in 2154 — the Earth is overpopulated, and most of its people are sick and trapped in extreme poverty. But wealthy citizens live on Elysium, a luxe space station orbiting the planet that has sophisticated medical devices that can heal any ailment. When Max (Damon) is given five days to live after being exposed to a lethal dose of radiation, he falls in with Spider (Wagner Moura), a hacker and smuggler with a personal vendetta against Elysium’s defense secretary (Jodie Foster). They make a deal: If Max steals valuable information, Spider will sneak him into Elysium, where he’ll be able to access life-saving care. Sharlto Copley (The Rats: A Witcher Tale), Alice Braga (Queen of the South), and Diego Luna (Narcos: Mexico) co-star.
