Based on the found-footage horror podcast of the same name, new genre-bending series Archive 81 is waiting, lurking in the shadows, and ready to give you your first real scare of 2022. The podcast that inspired the series proved that audio alone can tell a truly terrifying story, but the Archive 81 official trailer shows that visual footage can be even creepier.
Like the audio drama, the series tells two stories that take place several decades apart — and interweave in an eerie, supernatural way. Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), a documentary filmmaker and grad student circa 1994 is investigating a cult in her building. Two and a half decades later, present-day archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) is tasked with restoring her old, damaged VHS tapes. The more time he spends with her footage, the more determined he is to finish her investigation, figure out what happened to Melody and possibly even save her from the tragic, gruesome end she met 25 years ago.
Like an old box of mysterious videotapes, the Archive 81 trailer has a bit of everything, from creepy cult rituals to demons and spirits that can only be seen through the camera lens. Catch all eight episodes on Jan. 14, and watch the spooky trailer below (ideally, with the lights still on).
