Ana de Armas has transformed in Blonde, morphing from ordinary Norma Jeane Baker into golden superstar Marilyn Monroe, as seen in the new photo above. You may think you know the Monroe story, but Andrew Dominick’s upcoming film, adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 fictional retelling of the same name, peels back the layers to show the vulnerable woman behind the Hollywood icon.
“Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start — to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens,” de Armas told Queue. “He wanted the world to experience what it actually felt like to not only be Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane. I found that to be the most daring, unapologetic, and feminist take on her story that I had ever seen.”
According to Queue, re-creating Monroe’s signature look required de Armas to spend nearly three hours in hair and makeup each morning. Still, physical resemblance isn’t the only way Blonde pays tribute to the late star. Fans will certainly catch some Marilyn Monroe Easter eggs peppered throughout the film’s new teaser, which you can watch below. The song playing in the background, for example, is “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” which Monroe sings in the 1953 hit Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and there’s even a shot of the famous Seven Year Itch white dress.
But those beloved images are only half the story. Blonde also chronicles Norma Jeane’s traumatic childhood and the conflict that results as an adult between her very public and private selves. In the teaser below, de Armas goes through a roller coaster of emotions in less than a minute, as she sits in a makeup chair, desperate to summon the sex symbol that crowds expect, as she struggles to make her way through a sea of flashing cameras — or as she finally gives that dazzling Marilyn Monroe smile.
Blonde premieres globally on Netflix Sept. 23.
