A decorated veteran agrees to help his career criminal brother steal millions from a federal bank after realizing his wife’s medical needs will either kill her or drown their family in debt. But when the getaway fails disastrously, the two brothers hijack an ambulance with an EMT and a wounded police officer inside. The breakneck chase that follows has life-and-death stakes for everyone trapped in the titular ambulance. Directed by king of explosions Michael Bay (6 Underground), Ambulance stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Mirror), Jake Gyllenhaal (Velvet Buzzsaw), and Eiza González (3 Body Problem).

Will Sharp (Abdul-Mateen II), a military veteran fresh off his last tour in Afghanistan, feels the pressure mounting. He’s been struggling to find a job since his return to civilian life and has a newborn baby as well as a sick wife, Amy (Ingram), to support. When insurance denies coverage for an experimental surgery that could save Amy’s life, Will — at the end of his rope and against his own better judgment — turns to his adoptive brother, Danny (Gyllenhaal), for help. Danny, a career criminal, has a lucrative offer: If Will agrees to join Danny’s crew for a bank robbery, Will would walk away with a cut of $32 million. That’s far more than the paltry $231,000 Will needs for Amy’s surgery; it’s enough to set his family up for a lifetime.
However, nothing goes according to plan. When Officer Parker (White) unknowingly interrupts the robbery because he wants to ask out one of the bank tellers, Danny’s crew panics. In their violent attempt to escape, hostages, members of their own crew, and Officer Parker are shot and left behind. Danny and Will try taking a different escape route on foot through the bank’s parking structure only to hear the sounds of a police cordon closing in around them. It looks like there’s no escape for them until, miraculously, an ambulance arrives in the parking structure for Officer Parker. When Danny hijacks the ambulance at gunpoint, Will becomes their getaway driver. In the back of the ambulance, EMT Cam Thompson (González) and Officer Parker — who’s bleeding out from a gunshot wound — become their new hostages. Will an ambulance be all the cover they need to get away with millions? Or is it already too late for Will and his family?

No, Ambulance is not based on a book. It’s adapted from a 2005 Danish film of the same name.
Ambulance takes place in Los Angeles.
