Somewhere just out of reach of the real Tokyo sits a parallel version of the city — same streets, same landmarks, but stripped of every person who once filled them. Except a handful of strangers have been dropped into the city with no explanation. Getting back out means surviving a gauntlet of games, each one deadlier than the last. The Japanese sci-fi thriller Alice in Borderland follows a group of competitors caught in the Borderlands, but three main characters anchor the story: Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), and Chishiya (Nijiro Murakami). Find out more about the crew below.

Before Borderland, Arisu (Yamazaki) was an unemployed, directionless guy who was admonished by his dad and brother for always playing video games and never applying for jobs. But the skills Arisu learned as a gamer come into play once he’s thrown into the Borderland’s deadly games. His knack for understanding game logic makes him one of the sharpest players in the group.

Usagi (Tsuchiya) grew up learning to climb mountains alongside her father, and she never quite fit in with her peers. She was only at peace when she was scaling rock faces far from everyone else, and she learned to trust her instincts. In the Borderland, that same self-reliance makes her a formidable survivor — cool under pressure, physically capable, and slow to let anyone in, even as the games start to chip away at her guard.

If anyone in the Borderland has a poker face, it’s Chishiya (Murakami) — he’s soft-spoken and seemingly unbothered by high stakes. Before ending up in the Borderland, he was a doctor, working within a hospital system that made him disillusioned with humanity. In the games, he’s always several steps ahead of the competition, who view him as an enigma.
