In 1009, Goryeo's turbulent royal court leaves the throne empty. By order of the Empress, the heir apparent is now a monk fighting to survive death.

After many attempts on his life, Wang Sun requests aid from the capital. But King Mokjong is unresponsive after a fire rips through a royal banquet.

Commander Kang Jo reroutes to the capital at King Mokjong's behest. At the monastery, Wang Sun awaits the king's help, but destiny finds him first.

Wang Sun and Kang Gam-chan strive to stop the war with Khitan before it starts. But peace is no longer an option with Goryeo since the coup unfolded.

The bad blood between Wang Sun and Kang Jo reaches boiling point. Khitan's colossal army is on the move, marching closer as they ford the Amnok River.

Wang Sun consoles his people and the families of the enlisted. Meanwhile, Yang Gyu desperately holds the line at the fractured border of Heunghwajin.

Wang Sun is furious at the courtiers evacuating their families. Kang Jo has success on the battlefront, but Khitan's surprise attack tips the scales.

While Kang Jo remains loyal in the face of Khitan's king, Goryeo's courtiers are discussing surrender. Commander Kang Gam-chan is open to the option.

Wang Sun orders his armies to Seogyeong for backup. Kang Gam-chan strategizes at Khitan's camp, but Seogyeong's deputy minister has chosen betrayal.

While Seogyeong is under attack, Kang Gam-chan attempts to escape camp. The northeastern army is struggling to push Khitan back, but fate only knows.
