As the original guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hillel Slovak was instrumental in creating the band’s unique funk rock sound. The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel, is an in-depth look at the group’s formative years in Los Angeles in the late ’70s and early ’80s when Slovak (who died in 1988), bassist Flea, and frontman Anthony Kiedis were a found family of misfits pouring their creative energy into music that would eventually garner multiplatinum success and earn them induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In this new documentary, director Ben Feldman gets inside the band’s origin story and Slovak’s unique place in it. Featuring interviews with Flea, Kiedis, and others close to Slovak — including former Chili Pepper and Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, Alain Johannes of Eleven, and funk legend George Clinton— the film explores the dark and light of the LA music scene and the deep bond of the original members’ childhood friendship.
