On Aug. 12, 2021, police in Moab, Utah responded to a 911 call from someone who reported seeing a man hitting a woman before the two drove off together in a van. When police subsequently pulled over Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie, they noticed that both had marks on them indicating physical violence. Petito was sobbing, so they separated the couple and talked with each in order to figure out what was really going on.
When Petito went missing weeks later, a snippet of the police bodycam footage above circulated in newsfeeds around the country. Many people, including Petito’s parents, were baffled as to how the police came to the conclusion that Petito had been the primary aggressor. But in American Murder: Gabby Petito, viewers will see the complete bodycam footage for the first time, illuminating even more of the unsettling truth about how the incident was handled — and most importantly, how a missed opportunity for intervention might have altered the course of the horrific events that followed.
American Murder: Gabby Petito premieres on Feb. 17.
