Fresh off a fan-favorite Oscar win for Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder is adding new cast members to his upcoming film Rebel Moon. Joining the sci-fi epic’s already formidable cast are Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Saw), Michiel Huisman (The Haunting of Hill House, Game of Thrones), Alfonso Herrera (Sense8, Ozark) and Corey Stoll (West Side Story, Billions). The film begins production this year.
Rebel Moon began as a potential Star Wars spin-off project before Snyder decided to take it in its own direction. Snyder’s new film follows a group of colonists on the edge of the galaxy who enlist warriors to help them fight back against the invading forces of an intergalactic dictator. If that sounds a little familiar, don’t worry, you’re not going space-mad: Snyder is taking hefty inspiration from Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter when Rebel Moon was announced. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure.”
Already along for the interstellar ride are Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond), Doona Bae (Sense8), Ray Fisher (Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim), and Jena Malone (Sucker Punch). You can check out concept art from the film on Snyder’s social media accounts. It’s got some real Jupiter Ascending energy, and frankly we’re here for it.
