We’ve hit the dreamy days of midsummer, and love is in the air. Just look to the stars — the human, earthbound ones, that is — and you’ll find your fave celebs announcing their engagements in magazine cover stories, hard-launching on Instagram from Glastonbury, or making their couple debuts in matching outfits at Wimbledon. As the days get hotter, it seems, so do the romances.
If Cupid hasn’t found you yet this summer, don’t worry! No matter your relationship status, you can feel the love by streaming a summer romance. Cue up a timeless romantic drama that kicks off in the heat of summertime, a friends-to-lovers tale that spans a dozen Julys, or a sexy reality series in which love blossoms (or wilts) in a tropical paradise. Go ahead, let yourself fall in love!
Just enough of Too Much. The new romantic comedy series, co-created by Girls mastermind Lena Dunham and her husband, musician Luis Felber, stars Megan Stalter as a woman who leaves New York for London after a bad breakup, and finds that life and love across the pond is not at all what she’d expected. Not ready to make that move? Tune into Building the Band: The first batch of episodes from the music competition reality series, in which individual artists form singing groups with one another sight unseen (sound familiar?), have now landed. Not hitting a high note for you? Catch Season 2 of Quarterback. The sports docuseries is back for another touchdown run, this time following the Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow, the Atlanta Falcons’ Kirk Cousins, and the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff through the 2024 NFL season.
Set the mood. The swoony 2020 romantic drama Really Love, directed by Angel Kristi Williams, portrays a love story that sparks in the steamy DC summertime, then faces challenges as the weather cools. The acclaimed indie stars Kofi Siriboe as a struggling artist and Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as an ambitious law student, a seemingly mismatched pair who are drawn to each other despite coming from very different worlds. Watch and see if their love can sustain, even after the summer heat has faded.
Stick to One Day. The 2024 series, based on the 2009 novel by David Nicholls, chronicles the dynamic relationship of two people over the course of 14 years, starting in their early 20s and moving into their mid-30s, by depicting one single summer day of each year — July 15, to be exact (which is coming up soon!). Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall star as Emma and Dexter, two young people who meet upon graduating college and then weave in and out of each other’s lives for the decade and a half that follows, sometimes as friends and sometimes as lovers.
Find your Perfect Match. The dating reality series, launched in 2023 and hosted by Nick Lachey, kicks the genre up a notch: All of the contestants come from the Netflix Reality Universe, and as they pair off and compete in chemistry-testing challenges, the strongest couples earn the power to play matchmaker for their fellow competitors, inviting new singles into the villa and pairing them off. Watch the first two seasons now as you get ready for Season 3 to launch on Aug. 1.
To live in a Barbie world. Inspired by the iconic fashion doll, Greta Gerwig’s 2023 comedy smash stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as (just) Ken as they embark on a zany journey into the real world, which disturbs and inspires each of them in very different ways. Next week, it will be time to say “bye, Barbie!”
