In the aftermath of the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake, Ahmaud Arbery, one man has stood steadfast in the fight for justice: Benjamin Crump. Whether or not you’re familiar with Crump’s name, you’ve likely seen his face and felt his impact. The civil rights attorney has represented the families of victims of police brutality and has been referred to as “Black America’s attorney general.” Now, Crump is at the center of a new Netflix documentary about his life and work, Civil.
A newly released trailer for Civil details how Crump’s practice focuses on more than police brutality: He’s rallied in Flint for residents who were poisoned by the city’s drinking water and he’s currently representing plaintiffs in a lawsuit alleging that Johnson & Johnson baby powder marketed to Black women causes ovarian cancer. (Johnson & Johnson denies the allegations.) In 2021, he was named one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people, and continues to use his platform to strive for justice.
Civil is directed by Nadia Hallgren, who previously made the Michelle Obama doc Becoming for Netflix, and produced by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, as well as Hallgren, Roger Ross Williams and Lauren Cioffi. You can see it on Netflix starting June 19.
