Welcome to Essex College, an elite East Coast university where roommates Kimberly Finkle (Pauline Chalamet), Bela Malhotra (Amrit Kaur), Whitney Chase (Alyah Chanelle Scott), and Leighton Murray (Reneé Rapp) are ready to take on their first year with as little drama — and as much romance — as possible. So it’s too bad that their chaotic introduction to campus life is anything but chill. The raunchy three-season dramedy The Sex Lives of College Girls, created by Mindy Kaling (Not Suitable for Work, Never Have I Ever) and Justin Noble (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), is now streaming on Netflix. What happens in The Sex Lives of College Girls?

When she arrives at Essex College, small-town girl Kimberly (Chalamet) is already feeling a bit like a fish out of water. But the bubbly freshman is heartened upon meeting her three new roommates: Bela (Kaur), who’s excited to take on her new identity as a sexually free party girl instead of an “Indian loser;” soccer prodigy Whitney (Scott), who’s dropped off by her mother, Evette (Shepherd), a famous US senator who has no idea Whitney’s in a secret relationship with her assistant soccer coach, Dalton (Morosini); and the self-confident Leighton (Rapp), who learns upon her arrival that her high school best friends ditched her as a roommate.

In the days post move-in, the ladies ingratiate themselves into college life: Kimberly secures a job at a popular coffee shop, Sips; Whitney dominates at soccer practice before ending up in a scuffle with Jena (Maya Rose), who Dalton then benches; Bela attends an informational meeting about Essex’s elite comedy magazine, The Catullan, which she’s desperate to write for; and Leighton’s coming to terms with getting booted by her alleged BFFs, thanks to advice from her older brother, the handsome Nico (Leatherwood), who Kimberly excitedly laid eyes on when she first arrived on campus.

As the foursome settle in, Kimberly’s high school boyfriend, Max (Matthew Gold), surprises her with a visit, and the two take each other’s virginity, while Bela gets handsy with six of The Catullan writers to convince them to let her join the staff. The next day, after Max abruptly breaks up with Kimberly, Bela and Leighton run into Nico and his Theta Pi Delta fraternity brother, Cory (Colby Strong), who invites the roomies to a party that night. It’s the perfect distraction for Kimberly — and for Whitney, who’s just learned that Dalton is married.

Before everyone else enters the frat house, Leighton sneaks off. Inside, two women writers from The Catullan call Bela a slut, saying she should’ve checked if any of the guys on staff had girlfriends; Whitney, who’s reeling about Dalton being betrothed, hooks up with Kimberly’s coworker Canaan (Meyer); and heartbroken Kimberly gets drenched in beer, then hits it off with Nico, who offers her a dry shirt. Sparks fly, but Bela says the party sucks, so the women leave. Elsewhere, preferring to keep her sexuality hidden from everyone she knows, Leighton discreetly hooks up with an older woman she’s met on an app. While the four young women couldn’t be more different, they might just be exactly what each other needs to make it through their complicated new lives as college girls.
