By the year 2023, the Purge — an annual event during which all crime is legal for 12 hours and citizens are encouraged to exorcise their rage by robbing, torturing, and killing each other — is an American tradition as vital to democracy as the New Founding Fathers themselves. A father hell-bent on vengeance after the loss of his son plans to use Purge night to exact justice, but his mission gets derailed when he becomes the unwilling protector of two families who find themselves stuck outside during the Purge.
Directed by James DeMonaco (The Purge), The Purge: Anarchy is the second film in the Purge franchise and stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), LaKeith Stanfield (Atlanta), and Michael K. Williams (The Wire).

Leo (Grillo) has only one goal on the night of the Purge: Find the man responsible for his son’s death and make him pay in ways the legal system did not. But Leo can’t help but get involved when he drives by Eva (Ejogo) and Cali (Soul), a mother and teenage daughter ferociously fighting back against masked mercenaries who dragged them from the safety of their apartment building. After ruthlessly eliminating the mercenaries, Leo brings Eva and Cali back to the safety of his car — only to discover Shane (Gilford) and Liz (Sanchez) hiding in the backseat. They’re a married couple on the brink of divorce, and they promise they’re unarmed, but that promise is meaningless to Leo. The heated confrontation that follows comes to an end when the ghoulish gang hunting Shane and Liz — and a new batch of mercenaries after Eva and Cali — appear. The five are forced into an uneasy truce as they make a daring escape. To make it through the night, they must rely on each other — but Leo’s dogged pursuit of vengeance might get them all killed.

The Purge: Anarchy is set in Los Angeles in the year 2023 — though the Purge itself is a nationwide event.
