Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut took home the award for Best Feature.

    March 7, 2022

It was Ladies’ Night at the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards, Hollywood’s annual celebration of indie cinema held once more in a beachfront tent in Santa Monica. Women-led and directed films dominated in the major film categories, with The Lost Daughter taking home the awards for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay. In one of her multiple acceptance speeches, director and writer Maggie Gyllenhaal stressed the importance of having different and specific perspectives represented on film. “My film is in an unusual language,” she said. “It’s in the language of the minds of women.”

Rebecca Hall’s Passing also got its moment in the spotlight, with Ruth Negga dedicating her win for Best Supporting Female to the entire cast and crew. “Nothing can be created in isolation,” she said. “This is an award for all of us. I’m so proud to have been part of a beautiful film.” Meanwhile, Edu Grau’s gorgeous use of shadows and light nabbed him the award for Best Cinematography.

Finally, hot off its sweep at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Squid Game also earned a win, with Lee Jung-jae taking home the award for Best Male Performance in a New Scripted Series.
