Get ready to rev your engines and approach the bench, because The Lincoln Lawyer is coming to Netflix May 13. Based on the novels by Michael Connelly, the series follows scrappy Los Angeles defense attorney Mickey Haller, who does his legal work out of his Lincoln Town Car. When a colleague is murdered and leaves his casework to Haller, he’s plunged into a web of conspiracy that all seems to revolve around one high-profile murder case. It’s quite a bit of work for the backseat of a luxury sedan, but if anyone can make it work, it’s Mickey.
Best known for performances in films like The Magnificent Seven remake and 6 Underground, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo takes on the titular role, and his casting marks a milestone for fans of Connelly’s books: While Haller is written as biracial, a Latino actor has never played the role. “Manuel is the ideal Mickey Haller, as Haller follows in the footsteps of his attorney father with the showmanship of his Mexican movie star mother,” Connelly told Netflix when the show was announced. “Manuel brings a powerful dynamic and dimension to the role — one that aligns with the books and will give the show the opportunity to celebrate the Latinx heritage and roots of this Los Angeles–based story.”
The show takes its inspiration from Connelly’s second novel featuring Haller, The Brass Verdict. The first book of the collection was adapted into a film starring Matthew McConaughey in 2011. The new series is created and co-written by David E. Kelley, the mind behind everything from Big Little Lies to Ally McBeal to Anatomy of a Scandal. Other cast members along for the Lincoln ride include Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole and Angus Sampson.
You can stream The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix starting May 13. In the meantime, check out these first-look photos.
