Hot off the White House press briefing: Keri Russell (The Americans, Felicity) will star in The Diplomat as Kate Wyler, a career diplomat who lands a high-profile job she neither wants nor believes she is suited for. Just as she was about to head to Afghanistan, the United States government enlists her to serve as the US ambassador to the United Kingdom in the midst of an international crisis. It’s a role that has tectonic implications for her marriage and her political future.

You can take a look at Russell as Wyler in the trailer above. Plus, the video below, seen first on Vanity Fair, shows that Kate has no interest in leaning into “the Cinderella thing” of posing for an editorial spread in a magazine, complete with horse and carriage. She’d rather wear her go-to black power suit and actually do the work… although we’re living for the fantasy.

The political show hails from the mind of Debora Cahn, who is no stranger to the political arena after her work on Homeland and The West Wing. Cahn serves as executive producer on the series alongside Russell and Janice Williams (Pieces of Her, The Magicians). If you’re wondering what to expect from The Diplomat, Cahn has a little teaser for you.
“The Diplomat is a show about the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships,” she says. “It’s hard to keep a relationship going, be it a marriage or a military alliance. We change, the world changes, and yet we want these relationships to go on forever. It’s a show about a bunch of good people doing their best to keep their global and personal partnerships intact without killing each other. In the world of diplomacy, you’re dealing with a lot of rule-bound, protocol-driven behavior, but underneath all that, these are people who sweat, and spill coffee on their clothes, and forget the name of the person they’re talking to. All of that is always bubbling under the grandeur and majesty of working with heads of state.”
Sure is. Check out Russell looking a tad stressed below.

Joining Russell on this mission is Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, Kate’s husband and himself a brilliant diplomat. Rounding out the cast elsewhere in the embassy is David Gyasi, Ato Essandoh, Rory Kinnear, Ali Ahn, Nana Mensah, Michael McKean and Miguel Sandoval.
You can swear into The Diplomat on Netflix April 20. In the meantime, watch the trailer above.
