God save the queen(s) — all three of them.
In a new clip for The Crown Season 5, we take a look back at the actors who’ve played Queen Elizabeth II throughout the series: Claire Foy (Seasons 1 and 2), Olivia Colman (Seasons 3 and 4) and now Imelda Staunton (soon to be Season 5 and eventually 6).
We catch our first glimpses of Imelda Staunton’s pensive monarch in a new era as she pens a letter to her “Dearest Charles” at her country seat of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. She takes a moment to ponder how “the anniversary of any occasion is a time to reflect.”
And reflect she does on her past as queen, with the video flashing back to moments earlier in her reign. An early snapshot sees Foy’s Elizabeth practicing how to balance her heavy Imperial State Crown ahead of her coronation, while another shows her transform into Colman as they wear similar regal gowns on different occasions.
The retrospective also takes a moment to recognize the changing of the guard in a more direct sense, as Colman’s queen reviews an update to the national stamp on which Foy’s profile is replaced by hers.
The clip also takes us back to Foy dancing at Balmoral, then cuts to Staunton twirling in her own tartan sash years later, before taking the stage at a stately luncheon. Then, as Staunton stands before her audience, we hear a voice-over announce, “Constancy, stability, duty” — a trifecta of enduring qualities for any monarch.
