The documentary Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story follows Leo Baker’s life from 2019 to 2021, during which he made the difficult decision to step away from the competitive — and gendered — world of pro skateboarding to focus on living as his authentic self. The documentary’s interview subjects include Baker, his close friends and colleagues — like legendary pro skateboarder Tony Hawk — who have dominated the sport for the last few decades.

Goofy-footed skateboarder Leo Baker has competed at the domestic and international levels for nearly two decades. Born in Covina, California, and based in Brooklyn, he has competed in countless X Games since 2006, where he placed third in his first year. He was crowned the Street League Skateboarding Super Crown World Champion at the World Skateboarding Championships in 2016 and 2017. In 2019, Baker was placed on the first-ever USA Skateboarding National Team to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics — the first in history to include skateboarding as an event. Baker is the first trans skater to be featured in the videogame Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

Brooklyn-based pro skateboarder and Baker’s good friend Alexis Sablone started skateboarding in her Connecticut hometown when she was nine. Sablone is on the USA Women’s Street Skateboarding National Team, placed fourth in the 2020 Summer Olympics women’s street final and was ranked 12th worldwide in 2021.
She’s competed in the X Games for the last 13 years, winning seven medals. She also took home the 2016 Exposure Street Pro and the 2015 World Skateboarding Championship women’s street top titles.
In February 2022, USA Skateboarding named Sablone head coach for the women’s park and street skateboarding events in the 2024 and 2028 Olympics.

Brazilian-American pro skateboarder Leticia Bufoni is the most decorated woman in X Games history, having won gold six times and medaling 12 times total. A Street League Skateboarding Super Crown champion, Bufoni placed ninth in women’s street at the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she skated for Brazil. In 2013, she set a Guinness World Record for the most wins in the World Cup Skateboarding World Rankings street discipline by a woman.

In 2018, Soto won the Street League Skateboarding Pro Open and placed second at the Dew Tour. She also took home second at the 2017 Exposure Street Pro.

California-based pro skateboarder Vanessa Torres learned to skate in her hometown of Los Angeles. In 2003, she became the first woman to win gold in the X Games’ first-ever women’s street event, where she has medaled and placed in the top 10 numerous times since. Torres was the third woman in history to appear as a playable character in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.
