High school can be a tough time — embarrassing crushes, general awkwardness, and insecurities abound! But when you’re secretly a mythical sea creature, things can become extra tricky. 

Such is the case for Ruby Gillman (voiced by Lana Condor), who finds out that she comes from a family of krakens, whose history goes to the depths of the dark and mysterious ocean. Condor stars in the animated family comedy Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, which takes her on a journey of self-discovery as she learns the truth about her royal lineage and destiny. 

Directed Kirk DeMicco (Vivo, The Croods), Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken was produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella (Trolls World Tour, Trolls), with Faryn Pearl (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls World Tour) serving as co-director. The DreamWorks Animation film also features a star-studded cast alongside Condor, including Toni Collette, Jane Fonda, Colman Domingo, Annie Murphy, and Sam Richardson.

What happens in Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken?

Ruby Gillman is your average 16-year-old girl. She’s sweet, shy, a little awkward, and trying to make the most of her high school experience. She wants to go to prom with her skater crush, Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), and wants to be friends with the cool kids. Oh, and she’s a kraken princess, next in line to inherit the throne from her “Grandmamah”, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas (Fonda), to protect the ocean from terrible, power-hungry mermaids. No biggie! Except for the fact that the popular new girl, Chelsea (Murphy), happens to be a mermaid. But people love mermaids, right? Well, according to Grandmamah, that’s because “People are stupid.” Ruby doesn’t know she’s a kraken, though. Her overprotective mother, Agatha (Collette), has shielded her from this fact by banning her from going near the water. But when she finally learns the truth, she’ll have to embrace her true self in order to protect the people she loves.
