Acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong is back. The director returns with the relationship drama Possible Love, which South Korea has selected as its submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. Take a look at the new trailer for the film, which will debut on Netflix globally Nov. 6, above.

In his first film since 2018’s Burning, Lee explores the story of two married couples — Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and her laid-off husband, Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu); and the affluent pair Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker, and her spouse, Sang-woo (Zo In-sung) — whose worlds collide as Ye-ji seeks to film a documentary about laid-off workers. As their lives become increasingly intertwined, the couples confront repressed emotions and hidden desires.

“I’m not the type of filmmaker who can make movies easily,” says Lee, who is also behind such films as Secret Sunshine, Peppermint Candy, and Green Fish.  “Before I begin a film, I must be certain of what it means — to me, to the audience, and to cinema itself. That is why Possible Love took so long to make.”  Read on for more on Possible Love, coming to Netflix this fall

What is Possible Love about?

Possible Love follows the intertwined relationship of two married couples facing different paths and hidden desires. Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) lives quietly with her laid-off husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and their young son Cheol until a funeral brings them into the orbit of Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker chronicling laid-off workers, and her husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung) — a couple whose affluent lifestyle stands in sharp contrast to their own. When Mi-ok agrees to be filmed, she grows close to Ye-ji, and finds herself uneasily drawn to the unreadable Sang-woo. As their worlds collide, fractures begin to appear in their daily existence.

Who is in the cast of Possible Love?
