Pablo Larraín is coming to Netflix to tell the story of Augusto Pinochet, but not quite the way you may know it. The Chilean filmmaker has made films about Pinochet before; Tony Manero, Post Mortem and No form an unofficial trilogy of stories about life in Chile under Pinochet’s dictatorship. Larraín’s new film, El conde, will take on Pinochet himself — as an immortal vampire who finally decides to die after 250 years on Earth.
The black comedy will star Jaime Vadell (Tres tristes tigres, No) as Pinochet alongside co-star Gloria Münchmeyer (La luna en el espejo, 42 días en la oscuridad). Also joining the film are Alfredo Castro (Tony Manero, Tengo miedo torero) and Paula Luchsinger (Ema, La jauría).
“Using black comedy, we want to observe, understand and analyze the events that have occurred in Chile and the world in the last 50 years,” Larraín said of the inspiration for the film. “We have total confidence that we’ll do a good job, and it will undoubtedly be an adventure: a demanding shoot, but very inspiring and meaningful.”
El conde is a co-production with Fabula, the Oscar-winning production company that Larraín co-founded with his brother Juan de Dios. It’s co-written by Larraín and Guillermo Calderón, who previously worked with the filmmaker on The Club and Neruda.
You’ll be able to see El conde on Netflix in 2023.
