Pass the tissues. Actually, pass a mop, because this is sure to be a heart-wrencher.
Media icon Oprah Winfrey and Oscar-winning actor Viola Davis will discuss Davis’ forthcoming memoir, Finding Me, in Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event.
While Davis has long been candid about her rough upbringing, this is the first time she’ll share intimate details of her traumatic childhood, in which she battled poverty, abuse and “all the things that cause you pain.” Her journey from rat-infested apartments in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to Juilliard and Oscar stages has been a challenging one. The official synopsis reads that Davis “reveals how ‘giving up hope that the past could be different’ has brought her peace, forgiveness and a sense of self” and “explains how she manifested the loves in her life and what it took to become one of the most celebrated and talented actresses of our time.”

And Davis’ talent is something that can’t be duplicated. This is the woman who gave us phenomenal performances in movies like Doubt and Fences and kept us on the edge of our seats week after week in the delightfully chaotic How to Get Away with Murder. That’s what we call icon status.
