Single's Inferno - New Releases To Stream While You Count Down To 2022

12/25  Single’s Inferno What it is: In this Korean reality dating series, singles are stranded on Hell Island with the goal of falling in love. They must brave the scorching heat and aren’t allowed to reveal personal details. If they successfully find a match, the couple is allowed to escape to Heaven Island, where a luxurious suite awaits. There, they can finally get to know one another and let sparks fly.

Why you should watch it: Two thoughts while watching this: (1) Why are they all so hot?! (2) How are they not hot wearing sweater vests in 94-degree heat?! Single’s Inferno feels like Survivor meets Too Hot to Handle. It’s amusing seeing the contestants’ desperation to escape Hell Island, a place with fully carpeted tents, luxurious white bed sheets and rattan nightstands. To them, it’s hell, — but to us it’s a $2,000 Airbnb glamping experience.

Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer - New Releases To Stream While You Count Down To 2022

12/29 Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer  What it is: After diving into the sinister Cecil Hotel, Crime Scene returns with a new bone-chilling case. Using Times Square as a backdrop, Season 2 tells the story of the New York mecca’s dark past in the late ’70s and early ’80s. As the sex work industry was on the rise, a serial killer was on the loose hunting his next victim.

Why you should watch it: It’s easy to villainize sex work, especially when it’s linked to murder — but director Joe Berlinger does the opposite. Rather than criminalize the industry, Season 2 focuses on the social forces of Times Square and how they provided a setting conducive to the heinous crimes that took place there. If you’re watching the Times Square ball drop tonight, this is definitely a gruesome contrast.

Cobra Kai: Season 4 - New Releases To Stream While You Count Down To 2022

12/31 Cobra Kai: Season 4 What it is: The Miyagi-do and Cobra Kai rivalry is entering its fourth season. This time, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) are putting their differences aside to team up against John Kreese (Martin Kove), who’s now recruited the loyalty of Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan).

Why you should watch it: All the shifting alliances and messy breakups over the past three seasons have led to this moment. Although the characters aren’t the best at letting bygones be bygones, they’re masters at growth. Daniel and Johnny working together?! That's character arc, baby. If we know anything about Cobra Kai, it’s that the series loves to reference The Karate Kid movies — and Season 4 has something up its sleeve.

The Lost Daughter - New Releases To Stream While You Count Down To 2022

The Lost Daughter  What it is: Adapted from the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut tells the story of Leda (Olivia Colman), a distinguished professor who becomes obsessed with a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and her daughter while on sabbatical in Greece. While observing this family, Leda is forced to reckon with her complicated past.

Why you should watch it: The film’s characters are flawed (yes, even Will, played by dreamboat Paul Mescal), but it’s hard to pass judgement. Gyllenhaal translates the competing feelings of motherhood through flashback vignettes that disrupt the linear narrative. Young Leda (Jessie Buckley) has a duty to motherhood, but her desires don’t align with her responsibilities. Lingering in that dissonance is what makes The Lost Daughter captivating. It’s a seemingly quiet film, but the creeping silence leaves you astonished by the end.
