It’s Shrek’s swamp and we’re all just living in it. After premiering on March 1, Shrek and Shrek 2 made their way into Netflix’s Top 10 in just one week, with a combined total of 20.8 million hours viewed. How exactly did this grumpy ogre secure his spot in the cultural zeitgeist? Twenty-one years after the release of Shrek, the Dreamworks animated franchise continues to have a choke hold on pop culture, from sexy (and slightly disturbing) TikTok filters to an annual Shrekfest in Wisconsin. Whether you grew up watching the films on VHS or discovered them through fan-made retellings, you can now dive back into the Kingdom of Far Far Away on Netflix.
Shrek and Fiona aren’t the only ones choosing love over looks. Love Is Blind Season 2 has been in the Top 10 for four weeks, and the reunion episode has fans weighing in on Deepti Vempati’s act of self-love and Vanessa Lachey’s shakedown. “It’s hard not to get involved with all of these people,” Lachey shares with Tudum. “We have watched their love stories unfold. I feel the need to emotionally defend them, even if it’s with another cast member.”
As the cast continues to spill the tea online, Vikings: Valhalla sheds blood as the most-viewed series globally with 113.38 million hours viewed — less than two weeks after its premiere. Taking place 100 years after History’s Vikings, the new series chronicles the end of the Viking age with a new cast of warriors and monarchs. With everything from battles, beards and lovemaking, you could say the historical drama has the real BBL.
The action also packs a punch in the French film Restless, this week’s top non-English movie with 26.03 million hours viewed. In a cat-and-mouse game, a corrupt cop’s life spirals out of control when a mysterious witness comes after him. As for non-English TV, All of Us Are Dead is in its sixth week in the Top 10. The zombie phenomenon is no surprise, as Luke W. Boyd, editor in chief of the Zombie Research Society, tells Tudum. “I believe that our cultural fascination with the living dead lies primarily in fear itself. Whether that fear is the collapse of society or the inevitability of death, it will always be relevant.”
Rounding out this week’s list are new releases like The Weekend Away and Pieces of Her, led by Leighton Meester and Toni Collette. Curious about what other titles everyone is streaming? Check out the full Global Top 10 list here.
