The spirit of Rent playwright Jonathan Larson is strong and all around us — especially at this year’s 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations. On Wednesday morning, Rosario Dawson, who starred in the 2005 adaptation of Rent, and Vanessa Hudgens, hot off her role in the Larson biopic Tick, Tick... Boom!, introduced this year’s nominees. Netflix received 10 nominations for titles including Don’t Look Up, Passing, Power of the Dog, Tick, Tick... Boom! and Squid Game.
These will be the first SAG nominations for Passing star Ruth Negga for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role and Power of the Dog star Kodi Smit-McPhee for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. (Smit-McPhee poisons us with his sheer talent.) Co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Benedict Cumberbatch were also on the nom list for The Power of the Dog.
Other talent nods include Andrew Garfield for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role in Tick, Tick... Boom! While Garfield is no stranger to the SAG award circuit, it’s been five years since his last nomination for his performance in 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge.
The Lost Daughter, based on the Elena Ferrante novel, garnered a nomination for Olivia Colman for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, while Don’t Look Up crash-landed a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. And South Korean smash hit Squid Game championed nominations for stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon in their respective categories for Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series. Squid Game is also up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
The 28th Annual SAG Awards will take place in person at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and will simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. PST / 8 p.m. EST.
