Selling Sunset Star Does a Good Deed

After Matt Rogers closed on his role in No Good Deed, he turned to pal Chrishell Stause for real estate tips.

    Dec. 19, 2024

When Matt Rogers was cast as a real estate agent in No Good Deed, he only wanted advice from one person … Chrishell Stause.

Rogers and Stause, who sells multimillion-dollar homes and rings an oversize bell on Selling Sunset, met in early 2024 when they did a joint promotional appearance for a vodka brand at Coachella. They quickly developed a bond tighter than the LA housing market. (“I’m a hard Chrishell stan from the jump,” he says. She replies: “Matt has the most contagious energy. He’s truly the most amazing person.”)

But before he could even seek Stause’s counsel, Rogers’ audition was hard-fought and set in a location that couldn’t be further from the 1920s Spanish-style home that his alter ego, Greg, represents. Think: horrible lighting … and a toilet.

“I was living in a small studio in Long Island City in New York, and they were doing auditions in LA,” he says. “It was the winter and I had very bad lighting in the apartment. So I had to do the audition on Zoom in my bathroom. I put this laptop on the top of my toilet, sat in front of it, and I was like, ‘This is crazy, but they’re not going to be able to see me in the rest of my apartment.’ That’s how bad the lighting was.”

He landed the part, but if it were up to Stause (also an experienced actor), Rogers wouldn’t have had to audition. “Give this man all the roles!”

Below they talk about how their friendship developed, Stause’s advice on becoming a successful on-screen real estate agent (repeating the word escrow is key), and a possible Selling Sunset/No Good Deed crossover.

Matt Rogers as Greg in Season 1 of ‘No Good Deed’

Matt, what were you thinking when the two of you met?

Matt Rogers: It was great timing because I had just booked this role on No Good Deed, and I was playing a realtor, and I have literally the most iconic real estate agent you could think of and Netflix’s own. So there was a lot of synergy there.

Chrishell Stause: I felt like this was a happenstance situation because it set off so many fun things. I got to work with Matt at his charity event (DigDeep Water Project), which was so amazing.

Matt, what advice did you want from Chrishell?

Rogers: I was excited because I could pick her brain about some ideas to improvise on set. Traditionally, I get asked to improvise, and the truth is I need help! I asked, “What are some lines I can say on set?” because I knew I was gearing up for a scene with the one, the only Linda Cardellini, who also plays someone in real estate development. We face off in the living room of this gorgeous home. And Chrishell, I asked you, “What should I say?” And you had something locked and loaded.

Stause: So I was saying, “If you’re on a phone call, you could say something about them ‘releasing contingencies’ or ‘make it all cash.’ ” I was trying to give you easy things to remember. Obviously, dropping escrow is a fun one at any time.

Rogers: Escrow is my favorite word in the American dictionary. I did a line read for you a few times and said, “Well, did you release the contingencies?” The first couple times I didn’t nail it, and you let me know. But eventually you were like, “That was good!”

Stause: Yes, because that’s something where if they don’t release contingencies, we wouldn’t go forward. You have to have attitude!

So, Matt, how did the rehearsal go with Linda?

Rogers: I remember being like, “OK, I’m going to remember about the releasing of the contingencies.” And then we get on set and, of course, I go blank, and I’m there with Linda Cardellini, who is an acting hero of mine. We’re in this scene and there’s the fireplace, and we’re supposed to improvise. And she walks over to the fireplace and says, “Is this wood burning?” And I go, “Of course!” And she says, “That’s illegal!”

Stause: That was a trap, Matt!

Rogers: It was a trap!

You needed Chrishell in your ear, giving you notes on set.

Rogers: I needed her on set.

Stause: You need me in your ear!

Rogers: Exactly. Damn. Well, next season, fingers crossed.

Chrishell Stause in Season 7 of ‘Selling Sunset’

Speaking of a potential crossover, Matt, can we ever expect you on Selling Sunset

Rogers: I know nothing about real estate. I’m actually in the process of [starting to look for a home]. I need to text you, Chrishell. I’m going to start looking soon, and I have no idea what to ask.

Stause: Matt, we’re currently filming Season 9, so if you want to look on camera, I’m your girl.

Or maybe the crossover goes the other way, and we find out Matt’s character in No Good Deed [Greg] works for Selling Sunset’s Oppenheim Group?

Stause: Oh, 100%. I would love that. Oh my gosh, we should do some kind of crossover where you’d come in character.

Rogers: I think that he would actually fit in with The Oppenheim Group. The character goes in some really fun, surprising directions, and I think he could absolutely hang with any of those girls. And he’d love the styling budget. Honestly, I think that they’re missing a token gay guy that can shake it up.

No Good Deed is streaming now on Netflix.
