Welcome to “Meet Cute,” where we get up close and sometimes personal with our newest crush. This time around, we’re chatting with Mason Versaw about his new Netflix limited series, Boo, Bitch.
In Netflix’s new limited series, Boo, Bitch, Mason Versaw plays Jake C. — one of three Jakes on the show. Though he might have competition on the name front, only one Jake caught our eye and stole our hearts with his incredible emotional maturity. Versaw might not remember what the C. in his character’s last name stands for (“I’m wondering what the name could be?”), but he still put in a performance we won’t forget any time soon.

It’s been quite the year for the Ohio native. Not only is he starring in the new spooky comedy out July 8, but he also played a young Jonathan Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick... Boom! and an undercover New York Magazine researcher in the HBO Max Gossip Girl reboot. “It’s funny because it all happened at the same time,” Versaw says humbly.

In Boo, Bitch, he plays the heartthrob of Parkway High who Erika (Lana Condor) has been crushing on since freshman year, despite his on-again, off-again relationship with mean girl Riley (Aparna Brielle). But he’s not just the most popular senior in school; he’s got a sensitive soul to boot. He self-reflects, he’s direct and he even enjoys a straight-up FaceTime call.
Here’s your chance to have a meet cute with the man behind the one, the only, Jake C. (Not L. or W.)
Name: Mason Versaw Netflix project: Boo, Bitch Instagram account: @masonversaw Date of Birth: Nov. 20 Astrological Sign: Scorpio Hometown: Ashtabula, Ohio (According to Versaw, the town’s name means “River for Many Fish” in the local native language.)
Favorite food: I love Baja, I love Mexican food. It’s just so good. I’m new to being in and exploring LA, so when I first was exposed last year when shooting Boo, Bitch to the level of amazing food, it was so overwhelming.
Favorite Netflix show: I mean come on, Stranger Things is off the charts. It would be criminal for me to say anything else. I’m looking out this hotel window, and there’s literally a billboard for Stranger Things 4, and it’s massive. I definitely will say Stranger Things right now.
On a first date, I would... want to go explore nature, adventure in nature. Like a hike or something. Hell, maybe I have to take a few notes before I get back in the game.
My perfect date would be... hitting up a restaurant, a really good restaurant, in nature, how about that? We can combine the best of both worlds.
My worst dating experience was... oh my God. Worst dating experience would probably be when you think something’s a date but then you realize that it’s not a date, you know what I mean?

My current Netflix crush is... Victoria Pedretti.
My love language is... making food. It’s all about the food.
Jake is part of the Jakes crew in high school on Boo, Bitch. Who was your crew that you hung out with in high school? Were you in any clubs? Did you have any hobbies? Honestly, it was probably the theater kids. I remember just doing it for social life. I always thought when I was younger I was just going to be athletic, mainly. But then I fell in love with the band and theater kids, and they’re just so themselves and they’re nonjudgmental. It was just so freeing.
So literally the scene we see you in in Tick, Tick... Boom!, playing a young Jonathan Larson doing high school theater, was you at that age? Exactly, I was so free when I was shooting that. That’s so funny.
Were you someone who was into prom? Did you go? Oh my God, I’m a little boring in that way. I went to homecoming my freshman year, and I definitely didn’t have a date. Let’s just say I didn’t thrive in high school as much as Jake C. did. I really did kind of keep to myself. I had a few friends I’d hang out with, but even then I would be mainly kicking it with my mom at home. [laughs] But I went to a homecoming, I did not go to prom. I moved to New York to pursue acting when I was a junior in high school, so I never had the opportunity to go to prom.
It’s good that you got to go on the show then to make up for missing it. Right! Oh my gosh, it was great. Yeah, it was definitely like I got to make up for lost time.
Do we ever learn Jake C.’s last name? There was a moment when we’re shooting the scene that explains how Erika gets on Riley’s bad side and basically becomes a victim, and they handed me an envelope that was a prop, and it was for Jake C. I think he got his yearbook photos. It had his name on it, but as terrible as it sounds, it was a name that I couldn’t pronounce. Therefore, I can’t remember. [laughs] So it was there, but I don’t know. We got a little hint about his background when he says that he’s Jewish, so I’m wondering what the name could be.

Over the course of the show, we learn that at first Jake thinks it’s cool to be a DGAF person, but he comes to realize that he’s definitely more of a GAF person. Would you say you’re more of a DGAF or a GAF person? Or a little bit of both? Man, that’s what I can relate to with Jake C. so hard, especially when I was getting ready to shoot that scene [with Erika, where Jake C. tells her that he’s a GAF person]. I’m definitely a GAF. I’m a highly sensitive person. There are moments where people say that they don’t care, or they’re so aloof to things. I feel like I sometimes care too much, if that’s possible. But, yeah, I can relate to that.
How do you think Jake would describe himself if he had a dating profile? Or do you think that he would even do the dating apps? He’s more of a private person, which is funny because I can lean into relating to that as well. Because he says, “I’m not online at all,” I don’t think he would have a profile. Or, if he did, it would be interesting — it would be different earlier on in the story because he’d probably be trying to put on a bit of a mask of not giving a fuck, whereas at the end he does, so maybe he’d be a little bit more up front about who he is and real.

By the end of the show, Jake grows and realizes he should be independent and find confidence in himself rather than just seeking validation from a partner. What qualities did you admire about Jake C. and relate to the most? One thing for me that was so big and really stood out was the self-reflecting. I think it’s so difficult. It’s easy to be a little prideful, pointing fingers at who’s in the wrong and not accept that maybe you are. Jake C. does point fingers a lot in the story, but he gets to this point where it’s just in his face that he is wrong and what he’s experiencing is what he’s denied several times. So he accepts the truth, he accepts that he gives a fuck, and I respect that so much.
I respect that he gets to this point of just accepting who he is and then stepping away from a relationship to heal himself. I think before you get in a relationship, when you’re focusing on you and somebody else, you want to know that you’re handling yourself and you’re healed as much as you can [be], and you know how to support your own [self] before involving another in your life. So that was a responsible move. He had to do it. He knew he had to step away from Erika. [It’s] something really empowering, for someone who constantly feels like they have to be in a relationship.
He’s a very emotionally healthy senior. Jake also straight-up FaceTimes Erika at one point, with no warning. Do you straight-up FaceTime people? Are you more of a talk on the phone or texting kind of person? What’s your style? I get so anxious when it’s social media. I get anxious when I’m backed up on texts. Because it’s an exchange. If you send a text, you’re waiting for someone to get back to you. So I do find it easier when you’re on a call. And typically if it’s someone I’m comfortable with, I totally FaceTime people. I probably do what Jake C. does, call or FaceTime immediately. If it’s someone I don’t know as well, I’ll make a phone call. It definitely depends, but I’m so like Jake C. in that way.

So we have prom at the end of the show, and we assume they graduate. What do you imagine Jake C. is up to after graduation? We see Erika’s gone off to college, they kiss at the prom after-party, but we’re left wondering what Jake’s doing. At the end there, it’s so bittersweet the way everything is tied up. I think when Erika was going to that after-party, you see them kiss, so you wonder if that’s more of a goodbye kiss or a farewell to the high school relationship. I imagine that Jake C. totally is trying to heal and then lean into what he discovers about himself. If he’s really responsible, he will continue his healing. Maybe he’s let go of the relationship and is trying to maybe find more strength in friendships. Sometimes the Jakes and Archer aren’t completely reliable. To a degree, they were pretty self-serving. So maybe he goes and tries to join a different clique. Maybe the Afterlifers? They have a great dynamic, and he wants a real friendship like they have, so I’d love for Jake C. to be with the Afterlifers.
Yeah, he can join the Afterlifers, college edition. What do you think, at this point in your life, your unfinished business would be? Unfinished business. Oh my gosh. It’s so difficult because it’s something that’s so important to you in this moment that you want to really see through. There are so many issues in the world. To me, it would honestly probably be contributing to climate change or waste issues that we have and ultimately lowering [the] freaking garbage patch in the oceans — the sea life is just dying. So yeah, my unfinished business would probably be making sure that the world is left a better place than the way that I was born into it.
