What happens in Mask Girl

Mo-mi’s life on the run begins after she murders Mask Girl stan Handsome Monk, who attempted to assault her and reveal who she is to her camgirl audience. Then, fresh from having plastic surgery to change her identity, she stabs Mask Girl superfan Ju Oh-nam to death after he assaults her. With a new face, fugitive Mo-mi becomes a cabaret singer called A-reum. She finds a kindred spirit in fellow singer Kim Chun-ae, and together they thwart Oh-nam’s mom, Kyung-ja, from tracking down Mo-mi. After killing Chun-ae’s abusive roommate, Bu-yong, Mo-mi and Chun-ae skip town, but are stopped by Kyung-ja. There’s a struggle, and both Kyung-ja and Chun-ae are killed. Mo-mi pushes Kyung-ja’s car into the lake with Chun-ae, Kyung-ja, and Bu-yong’s bodies inside and drives off.

Years later, after giving birth to Mi-mo (Oh-nam’s biological daughter), Mo-mi turns herself in to the police. Since everyone’s been following the case for years, her arrest makes the national news — and sets up her daughter, Mi-mo, for a lifetime of ridicule.

How does Mask Girl end?

Mi-mo lives with her grandma, Young-hee, until she’s kicked out for fighting at school. With nowhere to turn, Mi-mo seeks out “Tteokbokki Granny,” a tteokbokki vendor who lives nearby and is one of the only people who’s shown her kindness.

After years behind bars, Mo-mi finds out the daughter of prison bully Eun-suk needs a kidney donor and offers hers. Lo and behold, their blood types are a match. Eun-suk, feeling indebted to Mo-mi, keeps her out of trouble with the warden and guards.

One day, a bible-study group comes to prison. Among them is Kyung-ja, who Mo-mi thought she’d killed. It turns out, Kyung-ja had narrowly escaped the sinking vehicle Mo-mi had placed her in, thinking she was dead. Since then, Kyung-ja, like Mo-mi, went under the knife to alter her appearance and changed her name to Nam O-ju so she’ll never be found out — especially not by Mi-mo. Kyung-ja plans to ruin her life like Mo-mi ruined her son’s. In fact, she’s already infiltrated Mi-mo’s childhood — yes, she’s Tteokbokki Granny. Kyung-ja’s been simultaneously earning Mi-mo’s trust, spreading rumors about her, and encouraging her to fight her bullies — which leads Mi-mo to repeatedly get kicked out of school and her grandmother’s house. Mo-mi tells the guards of Kyung-ja’s plans, but they don’t buy it.

Meanwhile, Eun-suk has been paying people to mislead Mo-mi about her daughter’s whereabouts. The day of the kidney transplant, Mo-mi convinces the guards to let her use the hospital restroom. Bad idea: Mo-mi’s been onto Eun-suk and her falsified intel this whole time, and she escapes. On the ground, she steals a car and drives toward Kyung-ja’s house — she got the address from her estranged mother, Young-hee, who’s also desperate to find her grandchild. Now, both Mo-mi and Young-hee (with Mi-mo’s sole friend, Ye-chun) are separately headed to save Mi-mo.

At Kyung-ja’s, Mi-mo is totally unaware of her new granny’s plans. She’s overjoyed to live with someone who treats her so well, unlike the cold and strict Young-hee. So Mi-mo doesn’t realize Kyung-ja’s spiked her soup with a sleeping pill and is about to videotape her death to get back at Mo-mi. Police show up — Young-hee called them from the road — but leave after finding nothing, since Mi-mo’s tied up in Kyung-ja’s hidden basement. When Young-hee and Ye-chun show up, Ye-chun unties Mi-mo, but it’s game over for Young-hee — Kyung-ja stabs her to death. Mo-mi shows up in time to witness her mother dying, saves Mi-mo and Ye-chun (both of whom have no clue who she is), and incapacitates Kyung-ja. Police return just as Kyung-ja emerges and kills Mo-mi (who was shielding Mi-mo). Tteokbokki Granny is then promptly killed by the cops.

A short while later, Mi-mo lives with Ye-chun’s family. Mi-mo finds a camcorder among her grandma’s stuff and plays one of her videotapes. It shows Mo-mi at a talent competition, happy and doing what she loves: dancing. Mi-mo tears up as she watches.
