The sweet-voiced robot with a killer attitude returns in M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to Akela Cooper and James Wan’s The Terminator-meets-Barbie horror film, M3GAN. For those who need a refresher, the first movie follows scientist and inventor Gemma (Allison Williams), who adopts her recently orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), after a tragic accident. To keep Cady company, Gemma lets her play with her latest project, M3GAN, an advanced, AI-powered android that grows violent — and, eventually, deadly — when trying to protect Cady from perceived threats. When M3GAN begins to see her creator as one of those threats, she dances her way through a series of gruesome murders until Gemma and Cady put a stop to her once and for all.

Or so they thought. M3GAN 2.0 begins two years after the events of the first movie. Now, another, deadlier android has gone rogue, forcing Gemma to resurrect M3GAN to do battle with the even more advanced AMELIA. What happens in M3GAN 2.0?

Roboticist Gemma (Williams) has reconfigured her approach to AI after the android she designed, M3GAN, almost killed her and her niece, Cady (McGraw). Gemma — having seen the perils and potential horrors of what she had created — has become a technology regulation advocate and published a book about her experiences and mistakes. She’s also partnered with Christian (Athari), a tech ethicist, as she works on a new project: creating a wearable robotic exoskeleton. Her former colleagues Tess (Van Epps) and Cole (Alvarez) are along for the ride as the crew wards off interest from a corrupt billionaire who may have nefarious plans for their creations.

Meanwhile, the US government’s secretive Defense Innovation Unit, led by Agent Sattler (Sharp), is testing out AMELIA (Sakhno), a brutally efficient assassin — and an android built using Gemma’s pilfered design. But when AMELIA defies orders and begins killing her creators, Gemma’s forced to make a choice: wait for AMELIA to potentially hunt her down for originating the designs or team up with M3GAN, who reveals herself to Gemma after secretly hiding in their smart home. Will Gemma successfully fight fire with fire? Or will her own creation turn against her in this battle of the bots?
