In a postapocalyptic, cyberpunk future, an AI lab’s head researcher spearheads efforts to end a 40-year civil war in space by cloning the brain of a heroic soldier. But there’s a twist: that heroic soldier is her mother. As you can imagine, things get… complicated. A brilliant scientist has to workshop a robot combat warrior who sounds and acts like her mom without getting too attached — while also programming the bot to mercilessly defeat the enemy and end a decades-long war. From acclaimed writer-director Yeon Sang-ho, whose critical successes include the relentless zombie thriller Train to Busan and the Netflix fantasy series Hellbound, JUNG_E explores how far our humanity extends when it comes to technology — and family.

In fact, it’s streaming right now.
Where else? Netflix. But first, why not check out the action-packed trailer below.
JUNG-E stars Kang Soo-youn, Kim Hyun-joo (Hellbound) and Ryu Kyung-soo (The Call). Multi award–winning actor Soo-youn’s starring role in JUNG_E marks her first film in a decade. Known as South Korea’s first globally recognized movie star, she died unexpectedly in May 2022. The first Korean actor to win an international film award, she racked up countless accolades for her work in the ’80s and ’90s — including honors at the Baeksang Arts Awards, Korean Association of Film Critics Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards.
In the near future when Earth ceases to be habitable, civil war breaks out between hostile factions in the recently formed space colonies. The key to ending the battle lies with JUNG_E, a combat android built on the brain data of a legendary mercenary and war hero, Yun Jung-yi. The RoboCop-like project’s chief researcher is Jung-yi’s now-adult daughter, Yun Seo-hyun. As Seo-hyun gets to know her mother anew while leading the effort, she also learns of JUNG_E’s devastating secret purpose.
The film takes place among so-called shelters — space colonies built near the moon after life on Earth could no longer be sustained due to devastating climate change. Topical? You bet. JUNG-E will pump your adrenaline and touch your heart.
