Madea’s Bro Joe Takes B.J. on a Wild Ride in Joe’s College Road Trip

    It’s the cross-country trek of a lifetime.

Anyone familiar with the Madea Cinematic Universe knows and loves Madea’s (Tyler Perry) cantankerous brother Joe (Perry). After stealing scenes in 12 Madea movies, Joe’s finally getting his own adventure in Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip. Joe’s mission, should he choose to accept it, is to take his sweet, innocent grandson on a cross-country road trip to prospective colleges. But the foul-mouthed grandfather might just lead his grandson straight to jail before they ever make it onto a campus tour.

Directed by Perry, the film also stars Jermaine Harris (Madea’s Destination Wedding) and Amber Reign Smith (Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black). This is the third Madea movie Perry has made in partnership with Netflix. Keep reading for more on the raucous comedy.

What happens in Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip?

Brian (Perry) is the proudest dad in the neighborhood. His son, B.J. (Harris), just graduated from a fancy Georgia private school. Though Brian wants his son to attend an HBCU, B.J. has already settled on his school of choice: Pepperdine — he and his buds are even planning a road trip to check it out. The university is decidedly not the HBCU Morehouse, which Brian is disappointed to learn his son has no interest in attending.

It dawns on Brian that — by raising his son in a predominately white, affluent community — he’s failed to help B.J. fully understand his own history and culture. Desperate to course correct before time runs out, Brian turns to his aunt Madea (Perry) and father, Joe (Perry), for help. When Madea suggests that ornery third-grade dropout Joe, and not B.J.’s best buds, join his naive grandson on the college road trip instead, Brian balks. But after coming home to see his son LARPing in their front yard, Brian’s distressed enough to accept Joe’s help. And if Brian needs to tell B.J. that his grandfather’s dying to get him into the car, then what harm could a little white lie do? There’s one thing for sure: Both B.J. and Joe are going to come back changed men.
