Consider the fourth installment of the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise halfway between a sequel and a reboot. A brand-new group of five friends raised in Southport, North Carolina — college grads reuniting in their coastal hometown for an engagement party — inadvertently cause a car crash that they agree to cover up and keep a secret. It seems like they’ve gotten away with it until one year later, when they’re all back in town for another wedding event and the bride receives an ominous note that reads: “I know what you did last summer.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) features three of the original franchise cast members — Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Sarah Michelle Gellar — in addition to the new cast, including Tyriq Withers (HIM), Chase Sui Wonders (The Studio), and Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks). The film is directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, creator of Sweet / Vicious and director of Do Revenge — which also stars Gellar.

What happens in I Know What You Did Last Summer?

When Danica (Cline) and Teddy (Withers) announce their engagement, their high school best friends, Ava (Wonders) and Milo (Hauer-King), can’t wait to travel back to Southport to celebrate with them. As the costly engagement party winds down, the group runs into Stevie (Pidgeon) — the fifth high school bestie who the rest fell out of touch with — as she’s breaking down the bar. Things take a nostalgic turn down memory lane when all five friends decide to drive up to Reaper’s Curve to enjoy the best views in town with a joint. But what starts as an intoxicated evening of shenanigans between old friends reconnecting turns deadly in an instant when an oncoming car swerves to avoid hitting Teddy, and teeters dangerously on the edge of the cliff. The group desperately try to save the driver, but are unable to do so, and  the car plummets into the ocean. They argue about what to do afterward, but eventually all five agree to cover up the murder, tell no one, and move on.

One year later, everyone’s back in Southport, under very different circumstances. Teddy and Danica have broken up, and Danica’s engaged to a new man. Ava and Danica haven’t spoken in a year, and Danica and Stevie are now best friends. Teddy’s living on his daddy’s boat, spending most of his time in a drunken stupor that not even Milo can break through. And if all that wasn’t messy enough, Danica’s second engagement party ends with the harpooning of her new fiancé. Someone knows what they all did last summer, and they won’t stop till all five of them are dead.

Sarah Pidgeon as Stevie locks a sliding glass door in ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer.’
