When an oddball Viking teen defies centuries of tradition by befriending a dragon instead of hunting it, the fate of his entire village is changed — for humans and dragons alike. How to Train Your Dragon is a live-action remake of the 2010 animated film of the same name. Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the animated movies, directs the 2025 remake. Gerard Butler (Copshop) reprises his role as the village chieftan, and Peter Serafinowicz (Million Dollar Secret) and Nick Frost (Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans) also star.

What happens in How to Train Your Dragon?

In the remote Viking village of Berk, only one thing is constant: There be dragons. The fire-breathing monsters frequently attack the village to snatch up Berk’s livestock, and no matter how many times the villagers fight them off, they always come back. Stoick (Butler), the leader of the village, is determined to root the dragons out once and for all — he wants to hunt down the nearby dragon’s nest, leaving the village relatively defenseless. But his son, Hiccup (Thames), has completely different ideas about how to defeat dragons.

A poor warrior, but a skilled blacksmith and builder, Hiccup designs a mechanized net launcher that means even the clumsiest of teens can trap the deadliest of dragons — including night furies, who never show themselves until they strike. One night during a dragon raid, Hiccup defies his father’s orders to stay inside and launches his new weapon. Miraculously, Hiccup traps the night fury, but out of sight of anyone else in the village. Nobody believes him, so he sets out the next day to hunt down his prey and make his first dragon kill, hoping to prove his worth to his father and the village.

But when he looks into the eyes of the injured night fury, Hiccup can’t do it. Instead, he frees the night fury who spares his life in return. Hiccup realizes maybe dragons aren’t the instinctive killers his father says they are. In fact, the villagers of Berk might not even have to fight the dragons after all. But how on earth will he convince the Berkians — especially his dad — that dragons are actually friendly?
