Grab your popcorn and a bottle of apple juice, because the students of Truham (and Higgs) are back. While Season 2 of Heartstopper doesn’t arrive until Aug. 3, Tudum is drawing back the curtain to show you the first four minutes right now — which you can watch above.
When we last saw Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) they’d taken their blossoming friendship to the next level, officially committing to being “boyfriends.” Meanwhile, Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney) were working their way through mutual romantic feelings.
Season 2’s opening minutes showcase Nick and Charlie affectionately reveling in the joyful, heartwarming bliss of young love. Partially based on Volume 3 of the Heartstopper graphic novels, this season will re-create some of the quintessential scenes from the original comics, moments Connor held in high regard while shooting the forthcoming season. “There’s just so many iconic moments. The Paris trip, everything that happens is just so, so iconic. It feels like we’re [shooting] one of these big moments every other day,” he told Tudum on the set of Season 2 last November.
Heartstopper’s second season will expand on the source material. “We had a good foundation [with Heartstopper, Volume 3] but there’s not enough in the book to [make] a whole season of TV,” creator and writer Alice Oseman told Tudum in November. “There had to be a lot of creation of new stuff, which I was really excited about.”
While the opening four minutes of Season 2 are filled with smiles and smooches, Charlie and Nick will face challenges that are entirely new to them. After deciding he wants to come out, now Nick is “actually going to try and do it and maybe it’s a bit harder than he thought,” said Oseman.
As for the other relationships? Well, there are Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), who Oseman believes parallel Charlie and Nick, but are “slightly in the future” because they’ve been together longer. “They’re a little bit further ahead in their journey. So they’re dealing with slightly different issues, but they’re still connected by this love that they have for each other,” said Oseman.
And then there’s Tao and Elle. “At the end of [Season 1], I feel like a lot of people came to me and their main thing was, ‘Oh my God, why didn’t they kiss?’ I think Alice is very smart, because it left the audience wanting more,” said Finney. “This season, we really haven’t let anyone down. I’m really happy with the work that we’ve made and what we’ve created.”
Love is in the air. Brace yourself for all of the emotions, because Heartstopper Season 2 launches on Aug. 3.
