The mysterious place at the center of the sci-fi horror series From doesn’t have a name, can’t be found on a map, and nobody who lives there was born there. And everything about it is a walking nightmare. Perpetually smiling, malevolent monsters live in the surrounding forest, and they’ll tear you limb from limb if you wander outside after the sun goes down. But one characteristic that really sets this place apart from everywhere else? Once you enter, you can never leave — at least, not alive. But that doesn’t stop people from trying.

Season 1 kicks off when a new batch of folks arrives on Main Street. From that moment on, Sheriff Boyd Stevens (Lost’s Harold Perrineau) and his fellow seasoned residents realize this place has a lot more secrets than they ever thought possible. The terrified townies in this haunting puzzle-box series — created by John Griffin (Crater) and executive produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Doomsday) and Jack Bender (Lost) — might be desperate to get the hell out of dodge, but your time there is just beginning. Keep reading to find out what to know before uncovering the show’s many baffling mysteries.

When will From be released?

The first three seasons are available to stream on Netflix right now.

What happens in From?

The Matthews family — mom Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno), dad Jim (Eion Bailey), daughter Julie (Hannah Cheramy), and son Ethan (Simon Webster) — are on a road trip when their path is blocked by a fallen tree. When they try another route, they end up in a dusty old town where they’re met by its self-appointed sheriff, Boyd (Perrineau). Boyd graciously redirects them, but soon enough, Jim and his family end up in the town once more. What they don’t know yet, but will soon find out — along with self-assured tech bro Jade Herrera (David Alpay), who gets stuck there shortly after the Matthews do — is that there’s no escaping this place. Nobody knows exactly how long this town’s been trapping people, but Boyd and the no-nonsense Donna Raines (Elizabeth Saunders) have been trying to keep the arrivals alive and find a way out for years. Well, that’s easier said than done.

The perpetually on-edge residents fall into two groups. The first lives in the town proper and oversees the sheriff’s station, the diner, the bar, the church, the barn, and the medical clinic. This crew includes Boyd; deputy sheriff Kenny Liu (Ricky He); the town priest, Father Khatri (Shaun Majumder); the town doctor, Kristi Miller (Chloe Van Landschoot); the Myers siblings, Sara (Avery Konrad) and Nathan (Paul Zinno); and Kenny’s parents, Tian-Chen (Elizabeth Moy) and Bing-Qian (Simon Sinn). The second group lives in Colony House, a dilapidated mansion that acts as a sort of commune. Donna leads this troupe, which includes Boyd’s estranged son, Ellis (Corteon Moore); Ellis’s partner, Fatima Hassan (Pegah Ghafoori); and the town’s longest-living resident, Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord). Nobody can venture outside at night, lest they be torn apart by monsters who take the shape of humans, but luckily, when inside, they’re protected by mysterious stone talismans hung near their doors.

As the Matthews and Jade settle into their new, rather purgatorial home, they slowly unearth its many secrets while also adapting to ever-changing circumstances seemingly brought on by their arrival. Something seems to be rewriting the established rules of this town. Are the unknown forces at play too powerful to ever truly escape — or can they find a way out once and for all?
