‘Firefly Lane’ Deleted Scene Welcomes You to ‘The Girlfriend Hour’

Showrunner Maggie Friedman explains why this scene was cut from the series finale.

The hair, the makeup, the clothes: fabulous. Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl) looks like a pro in this deleted scene from the Firefly Lane series finale. It’s the very first episode of The Girlfriend Hour, the talk show that became a phenomenon and made the journalist turned TV host a household name.

“There were a few scenes that we loved that turned out great that we ended up lifting out just to keep a certain flow,” showrunner Maggie Friedman tells Tudum, explaining why the clip was left on the cutting-room floor. “This particular scene was originally toward the end of the episode.”

Tully is incredibly nervous, but luckily her best friend Kate (Sarah Chalke) — her confidant, cheerleader and closest ally — is there to remind her that she can do it. She just needs a little nudge to remind herself of the innate confidence she possesses. Instead of suggesting the old “imagine the audience in their underwear” trick, Kate urges Tully to pretend she’s not talking to a crowd of strangers. She’s talking to one person: her best friend.

Naturally, Tully steps onstage and nails it (with her own personal cheering section of Kate and Marah waiting for her in the wings, of course).

“You see Tully walk out onstage and greet her audience. That’s the opening of the pilot episode, and this scene has a very similar shot of her walking out and greeting her audience,” Friedman says. “I love those kinds of full-circle moments every time we can do it. So it was hard to let go of just for that reason!”

Luckily, the clip lives on here. Watch it above.
