Rejoice, Evil Dead-heads: 2023’s Evil Dead Rise has arrived on Netflix, straight from the bowels of hell. Starring Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, and Morgan Davies, the film from director Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) follows estranged sisters who must fight for their lives after an earthquake exhumes an evil spirit that takes possession of anything in its path. Evil Dead Rise is the fifth and most recent film in the franchise, preceded by Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness, as well as Fede Alvarez’s 2013 film Evil Dead.

Beth (Sullivan) and her sister, Ellie (Sutherland), haven’t spoken in weeks. Ellie’s been on the road touring and didn’t even realize her sister’s partner, Jay, had left. But — surprise! — now Ellie’s in town to visit Beth and Beth’s three kids: Danny (Davies), Bridget (Echols), and Kassie (Fisher). It’s awkward, but they’re working through it … until an earthquake hits, opening up a secret chamber of the condemned apartment building where Beth lives. When Danny checks it out, he finds an ancient book and old records with the power to unleash evil spirits — Deadites — capable of possessing people in an instant. Will Beth and her family survive the onslaught of evil that will soon befall them?

The film takes place primarily in Los Angeles.
